Undergrass Socks by A la maille suivante

What is Being Made

Undergrass is a pair of knitted socks designed by Stephanie Voyer and published by A la maille suivante. These are innovative socks specifically engineered to showcase color-blocking yarn to its fullest potential. The design features clever shaping that creates flattering chevron patterns, combined with unique textured stitches along the top of the foot. This intermediate-level project is written for average width feet but offers flexibility for customization in both length and width through needle size adjustments.

Knitting Techniques

Undergrass employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive appearance. The socks are worked in the round using either double-pointed needles or a circular needle, which allows for seamless construction. Color-blocking yarn is strategically utilized throughout the design to create visual interest. The chevron shaping requires careful stitch manipulation and increases and decreases placed at specific intervals. Textured stitches are incorporated along the top of the foot to add depth and visual complexity to the finished garment.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The pattern employs a variety of essential knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Stockinette Stitch – the primary stitch used throughout the socks, worked in the round for a smooth fabric
  • Slip Stitches (sl1) – used for shaping and creating clean edges
  • Knit Two Together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
  • Slip, Slip, Knit (ssk) – a left-leaning decrease that pairs with k2tog for balanced decreases
  • Knit Through Front and Back (kfb) – an increase that adds stitches where needed
  • Make One Right (M1R) – a directional increase
  • Make One Left (M1L) – a directional increase
  • Yarn Overs (yo) – creates decorative eyelet holes and contributes to textural interest
  • Purl Two Together (p2tog) – a decrease used in specific sections
  • Through Back Loop (tbl) – a technique that twists stitches for textural variation

Materials and Specifications

Undergrass is designed to be worked with 4-ply yarn weight, specifically using Uru.Yarn Heels & Toes in the colorway Shield Bug. The yarn composition is 75% Superwash Merino and 25% Nylon, providing durability and easy care for everyday sock wear. One skein containing 400 yards (366 meters) per 100 grams is sufficient to complete the project.

The recommended needles are US 1.5 (2.5 mm) double-pointed needles or a 32-inch (80 cm) circular needle. The gauge is 28 stitches by 32 rounds over 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette Stitch worked in the round. A tapestry needle is required for weaving in ends. These specifications create a finished sock suitable for average width feet, though adjustments can be made by changing needle sizes to modify the final dimensions.
