Product Description
Inspired by Ariel - the little mermaid, I created a pretty little set for your Blythe doll. The main front fastening tunic dress is knit from my own handspun yarn in gorgeous blues and greens with turquoise mohair and bead edging and emerald green pearls to fasten the bodice. Underneath is a very fine knit mohair skirt with a button fastening at the waist. A 'coral' scarf with shell charm and crystal heart and a itty bitty vinyl bag compete the set.
You will need 2mm and 2.5mm needles, 4 ply/fingering weight yarn, laceweight mohair yarn, crochet thread, scraps of vinyl for the bag and beads to decorate.
This purchase includes patterns for dress, skirt and instructions for bag. Coral scarf is available FREE to all my mailing list subscribers. You can join here.. www.pollymakes.co.uk
Under the Sea Set for 12" Blythe Doll by Polly
Project Overview
This downloadable knitting pattern from independent designer Polly creates a charming mohair skirt designed specifically for 12-inch Blythe dolls. The garment features delicate laceweight construction with elegant stitch patterning, making it an ideal accessory for doll collectors and knitting enthusiasts who enjoy small-scale projects.
What Is Being Made
A fitted mohair skirt for 12-inch Blythe dolls, featuring a ribbed waistband, graduated increases for shaping, and decorative stitch patterns. The skirt includes a button closure at the waist and is designed to be sewn up the back seam with a functional button loop.
Materials Required
- Needles: 2mm needles
- Yarn: Laceweight mohair yarn
- Notions: One button for waistband closure
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques suitable for doll-sized garments. The construction begins with a cast-on of 36 stitches at the waist edge, ensuring proper fit for the doll. Ribbing creates elasticity and a neat waistband finish, while strategic increases throughout the pattern shape the skirt for a flattering silhouette.
The pattern utilizes both yarn-over increases and knit-front-and-back increases to gradually expand stitch count from the initial 36 stitches to 126 stitches at the hem, creating gentle shaping. A loose cast-off maintains the delicate nature of the laceweight yarn and prevents puckering at the hem edge.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
- Knit (K): Basic knit stitch forming the primary fabric
- Purl (P): Reverse stitch creating textural contrast
- Kfb (Knit into Front and Back): Increase technique that adds one stitch by working into both the front and back loops of a single stitch
- K2tog (Knit Two Together): Decrease technique that reduces stitch count by one
- Stocking Stitch (SS): Alternating knit and purl rows creating a smooth, classic fabric surface
- Ribbing: K1, P1 rib worked for 5 rows at waistband for elasticity and definition
- Decorative Stitch Pattern: Alternating rows of *K1, P3* and *K3, P1* repeat patterns creating vertical textural interest
- Inc (Horizontal Strand Increases): Increases made by knitting into the horizontal strand between stitches on right and left needles, then knitting into the back of the loop for an invisible increase method
Construction Method
The skirt is constructed from the waist downward in a seamless approach until the final back seam closure. After the initial ribbed waistband, the pattern incorporates multiple increase rounds strategically placed to create graduated shaping. The decorative stitch pattern is maintained throughout the body of the skirt, measuring approximately 7 centimeters in length before the final increases are worked.
Finishing involves stitching the back seam while leaving an opening for closure, creating a functional button loop at the waistband, and attaching a button for secure fastening. The loose knit-wise cast-off ensures the hem remains flexible and appropriate to the delicate laceweight construction.
