Tybee Knit Top by Dockside Knits
Project Overview
Tybee is an intermediate-level knit top designed by Karen Bourquin and available as a downloadable PDF pattern from Dockside Knits. This garment is crafted using the knitting technique and is worked in sport-weight yarn, making it an ideal project for knitters with some experience who are ready to tackle stitch patterns and shaping techniques.
Finished Measurements and Sizing
The Tybee top is offered in six sizes with bust measurements ranging from 33 ½ inches (85 cm) to 53 ½ inches (136 cm). The waistband length varies from 21 ¾ inches to 23 ½ inches (55 to 59.5 cm) across the size range. This pattern is designed with negative ease in mind, intended to fit with 0–2 inches (0–5 cm) of negative ease for a fitted silhouette.
Stitch Techniques and Patterns
The Tybee features an Eyelet Pattern worked over a panel of 13 stitches, creating decorative openwork details throughout the garment. This stitch pattern combines knit and purl stitches with yarn overs and knit two together decreases to form the eyelet motif.
- Eyelet Pattern Foundation (Rows 1–4): Alternating right-side and wrong-side rows establish the base structure. Right-side rows work as K3, [p2, k3] twice, while wrong-side rows reverse this with P3, [k2, p3] twice. Rows 3 and 4 repeat rows 1 and 2.
- Eyelet Pattern Repeat (Rows 5–6): Row 5 introduces the yarn-over and decrease sequence: K1, yo, k2tog, [p2, k1, yo, k2tog] twice. Row 6 returns to the purl-based wrong-side pattern.
- Body Shaping: Decreasing is worked evenly across marked sections to create waist shaping. The pattern uses stitch markers to organize the eyelet panels and maintain pattern alignment during decreases.
Construction and Materials
The Tybee is constructed using sport-weight yarn, with the pattern requiring 9 to 14 skeins depending on the finished size. The suggested yarn is Den-M-Nit from elann.com, which provides 100 yards (92 meters) per 1 ¾ ounce skein. Knitting needles appropriate for sport-weight yarn are required to achieve the correct gauge and fabric drape for this fitted top.
Pattern Complexity
Rated as an intermediate project, the Tybee requires familiarity with fundamental knitting techniques including yarn overs, decreases (knit two together), and working stitch patterns from charts or written instructions. The combination of eyelet patterning with waist shaping makes this an engaging project for knitters building their skills in stitch pattern integration and garment construction.
