What you'll need

Product Description

Suitable for knitters with sock knitting experience, this is a fascinating and fun way to knit two socks at the same time - one inside the other!

The pattern provides a training version as well as actual sock-sized versions. I suggest you start with the training version - it's a quick knit, and using thicker yarn and needles allows you to get confident with the technique.

Several versions of this technique have been published in the past few years. This pattern provides two key improvements: there are multiple sizes, and I've engineered it so that the socks exactly match the result if you were to work in the normal manner.

Although the pictures are shown with dpns, the pattern is written for any needle type: dpns, magic loop or two circulars. Top-down.

The War & Peace Socks: Two Socks in One by Kate Atherley

What Is Being Made

The War & Peace Socks is a knitting pattern designed to create two complete socks simultaneously using a single continuous knitting process. Rather than knitting socks sequentially, this innovative approach allows you to work one sock inside the other, resulting in two finished socks from one unified construction. The pattern includes both a training version for skill development and actual sock-sized versions ranging from extra-small to extra-large for both women and men.

Project Overview

This is an intermediate-level knitting project suitable for knitters with existing sock knitting experience. The pattern offers a unique approach to sock production that improves upon previously published versions by providing multiple size options and engineering the construction so that the final result matches what you would achieve using traditional single-sock methods. The techniques taught in this top-down sock pattern can be readily adapted to toe-up sock construction as well.

Techniques Used

The primary technique central to this pattern is simultaneous two-sock knitting, where both socks are worked concurrently on the same needles in a nested construction. This method requires understanding how to manage two separate sock tubes while maintaining proper tension and stitch integrity for each. The pattern employs top-down construction methodology, beginning at the cuff and working toward the toe. Knitters will develop skills in managing multiple working yarns or sections, coordinating increases and decreases across two socks simultaneously, and ensuring symmetrical shaping for both pieces.

Stitches and Construction

While specific stitch patterns are not detailed in the provided content, sock knitting fundamentals apply, including ribbing for the cuff, stockinette stitch for the leg and foot, and the specialized shaping required for heel and toe sections. The simultaneous construction means all major shaping elements—cuff ribbing, leg decreases, heel turns, and toe decreases—are worked for both socks in tandem, requiring careful attention to stitch counts and pattern alignment.

Materials

Yarn Weight: This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn, a standard weight for sock knitting that provides durability and a refined drape. The training version uses thicker yarn and larger needles to allow knitters to build confidence with the technique before progressing to actual sock-sized versions with appropriate 4-ply materials.

Needles: The pattern accommodates different needle sizes depending on whether you are working the training version or the actual socks. The training version uses thicker needles paired with heavier yarn for visibility and ease of learning, while the actual sock versions use appropriately sized needles for 4-ply yarn to achieve proper gauge and fit.

Size Range

  • Training Version: Small scale for learning purposes
  • Actual Socks XS: 7.5-inch foot circumference, fits 8–8.5 inches
  • Actual Socks S: 8-inch foot circumference, fits 8.5–9 inches
  • Actual Socks M: 8.5-inch foot circumference
  • Actual Socks L: 9-inch foot circumference
  • Actual Socks XL: 9.5-inch foot circumference

Pattern Format

This is a downloadable PDF pattern, making it immediately accessible for digital devices. The inclusion of both a training version and multiple actual sock sizes within a single pattern document provides flexibility for knitters at different stages of learning this specialized technique.
