Product Description
The Two of Hearts Beanie is a quick to knit up hat that makes a perfect gift for Valentine’s Day or to show your love for all things winter.
This hat has an easy double heart motif that is repeated three times around the Beanie and is worked up using stranded colourwork. Knitting techniques used are: knit and purl stitches worked in the round, stranded colourwork and decreasing stitches. You will need US11 (8.0mm) and US15 (10.0mm) 16” circular needles and 2 different colours/balls of Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick yarn.
The pattern includes a graph outlining the colourwork for the hat in addition to detailed written instructions.
The pattern as written will result in a hat that fits most pre-teen through to adult women’s heads. The finished hat measures approximately 9” in length and an unstretched band circumference of 17” when using suggested yarn and following stitch gauge outlined in the pattern.

What is Being Made
The Two of Hearts Beanie is a knitted hat designed to fit an average adult head. This downloadable PDF pattern provides complete instructions for creating a cozy, finished beanie using a straightforward construction method that works from the ribbed band upward to the crown.
Construction Method and Techniques
This beanie is worked in the round, a fundamental knitting technique that creates seamless cylindrical garments without requiring seaming. The pattern begins with casting on stitches using the circular needle method, then progresses through the band section before transitioning to the main body and finally decreasing stitches at the crown to close the top of the hat. The "join in the round" method is referenced, which involves passing an extra stitch over the first stitch to create a continuous loop—a technique well-suited for beginners learning to work with circular needles.
Stitches Used
The Two of Hearts Beanie employs basic knit and purl stitches as its foundation. The band section features a 2x2 ribbed pattern (K2, P2 repeat), which creates vertical columns of knit and purl stitches that provide stretch and structure to the hat's edge. The body of the hat is worked using a graphed pattern diagram, allowing for colorwork or textural variation using two different yarn colors or balls. This combination of ribbing and patterned body sections creates both functional fit and visual interest.
Materials and Tools
This pattern requires Lion Brand Yarns Wool Ease Thick & Quick yarn (or an equivalent super chunky weight yarn) in two different colors. The super chunky weight classification means the yarn is thick and substantial, allowing for quick project completion. Knitters will need two circular knitting needles in different sizes: US11 (8.0mm) needles for the band and US15 (10.0mm) needles for the body. The larger needle size for the body creates a slightly looser gauge that contrasts with the tighter band, enhancing the hat's fit and drape. Additional supplies include a stitch marker to denote the beginning of each round, a blunt yarn needle for weaving in ends, and scissors for cutting yarn.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner-friendly pattern, the Two of Hearts Beanie is an excellent introductory project for knitters new to working in the round or those building foundational skills. The use of basic stitches, clear written instructions paired with a graphed diagram, and straightforward shaping make this an accessible design for developing confidence with circular needle techniques.
