Twist Headband by Crystal
What is Being Made
The Twist is a chic and trendy head warmer headband designed by Crystal for cool winter days and nights out. This cozy knitted accessory is crafted to fit head circumferences of 20-22 inches (51-56 cm) and offers the perfect balance of warmth and style, flattering on anyone who wears it.
Yarn and Materials
This headband pattern is specifically designed for super bulky yarn, requiring approximately 70-80 yards of yarn to complete the project. The sample shown uses approximately 75 yards (68 meters) of Cascade Yarns Lana Grande. While gauge is not critical for this project, variations in yarn type and weight may affect the yardage requirements and finished size of the completed headband.
Needles and Tools
The Twist headband is worked on US 13 (9.0 mm) straight needles, which are appropriately sized for working with super bulky yarn. Additional tools required include a cable needle for executing cable stitches, a tapestry needle for finishing and weaving in ends, scrap yarn for stitch holders or markers, and a crochet hook for any finishing techniques.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This beginner-friendly knitting pattern utilizes fundamental knitting techniques suitable for those new to the craft. The primary stitches used include basic knit and purl stitches, which form the foundation of the design. The pattern also incorporates cable work, specifically a C12F (Cable 12 Front) stitch, which is executed by slipping 6 stitches onto a cable needle and holding them to the front of the work, then knitting the next 6 stitches from the left-hand needle, followed by knitting the 6 stitches from the cable needle. This cable technique creates the distinctive twisted texture that gives the headband its name and visual appeal.
Pattern Structure
The pattern begins with casting on stitches using the CO (cast on) method and progresses through rows of knitting and purling, with cable crossings worked at strategic intervals. The headband is completed by binding off (BO) all stitches to create a finished edge. The straightforward stitch abbreviations used throughout—including k for knit, p for purl, st(s) for stitch or stitches, and WS for wrong side—make this pattern accessible for beginners while providing clear construction guidance.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner project, the Twist headband is an excellent introduction to knitting with super bulky yarn and basic cable techniques. The forgiving nature of chunky and super chunky yarn weights means that minor tension variations are less noticeable, making this an ideal first cable project for knitters building their skills.
