Twist Collective Italic PDF – Seamless Lace Pullover Knitting Pattern by Kate Gilbert
Italic is a beautifully designed women's pullover sweater by Kate Gilbert, published by Twist Collective as a downloadable PDF pattern. The design features an elegant lace yoke set atop a smooth, seamless body, making it a rewarding project for intermediate to experienced knitters who enjoy combining classic construction with decorative stitch work.
What Is Being Made
The pattern produces a seamless, bottom-up pullover sweater with a fitted silhouette. It is designed to be worn with a modest 0–2 inches (0–5 cm) of ease at the bust, giving it a close, flattering fit. Finished bust measurements range across five sizes: 36, 40, 44, 48, and 52 inches (91.5, 101.5, 112, 122, and 132 cm), with finished lengths ranging from approximately 21¼ to 25¾ inches (54–65.5 cm). The sample shown was knitted in the 36-inch size.
Construction Techniques
- Bottom-up construction: Both the body and the sleeves are worked separately from the cast-on edge upward to the underarms.
- Worked in the round: All pieces are knitted in the round on circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming the body and sleeves. Small-circumference knitting in the round is required for the sleeves.
- Seamless yoke: After the body and sleeves are worked separately to the underarms, all pieces are joined together and the yoke is worked seamlessly in the round as a single unit.
- Lace patterning: A dedicated Body and Cuff Chart introduces lace motifs worked over 22 rounds, appearing at both the lower body hem and the sleeve cuffs, creating a cohesive decorative detail throughout the garment.
- Shaping: Sleeve shaping is achieved through a series of increase rounds (M1L and M1R increases) worked at regular intervals, building from the cuff upward to the desired sleeve width before joining at the underarm.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch (St st): The primary fabric of the body and sleeves, worked in the round as all knit stitches.
- 1×1 Ribbing (K1, P1): Used as a transitional or border round during the lower body and cuff sections.
- Lace stitches: Worked from the Body and Cuff Chart over 22 rounds, these decorative stitches appear at the hem of the body and at the sleeve cuffs.
- Make One Left (M1L) and Make One Right (M1R): Directional increase stitches used to shape the sleeves smoothly and symmetrically.
Materials – Yarn
The suggested yarn is Rowan Cotton Cashmere, a lightweight worsted-weight yarn with a luxurious fiber blend of 85% Cotton and 15% Cashmere. Each ball contains approximately 137 yards (125 m) and weighs 1¾ oz (50 g). The sample was knitted in colorway #00214 Coral Spice. The pattern calls for 7 (8, 9, 10, 11) hanks depending on the size being worked. The cotton-cashmere blend gives the finished fabric a soft drape and a subtle sheen, well suited to the lace detailing.
Materials – Needles
- Size 5 US / 3.75 mm circular needle: Used for the cast-on and initial rounds of the body and sleeves. Required in a length of 24–48 inches (60–120 cm) depending on bust size, plus needles in a preferred style for small-circumference knitting in the round for the sleeves.
- Size 6 US / 4 mm circular needle: The primary needle used for the main fabric of the body, sleeves, and yoke. Also required in a 24–48 inch (60–120 cm) length, as well as small-circumference options for the sleeves.
