Project Overview

BayBee's First Blanket is a beginner-friendly Tunisian crochet blanket designed to introduce crafters to multiple Tunisian stitch techniques. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished blanket measuring approximately 60 x 100 centimeters, making it an ideal size for a baby blanket or small throw. The design incorporates three distinct color sections, each featuring a different Tunisian stitch pattern to build foundational skills while creating a visually interesting finished piece.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a rectangular baby blanket constructed in three horizontal color blocks. Each color section uses a different Tunisian crochet stitch, creating textural variety and visual interest across the finished blanket. The blanket is suitable for gifting to new parents or as a decorative throw for a nursery or child's room.

Techniques and Stitches Used

The blanket employs three distinct Tunisian crochet techniques, each representing a different stitch pattern:

  • Tunisian Hexagon Stitch: Used in the Taupe color section, this stitch creates a dimensional, textured surface with hexagonal motifs. The Taupe section is worked over 8 rows.
  • Tunisian Simple Stitch: Applied in the Light Champagne color section, this fundamental Tunisian stitch is one of the most basic and versatile techniques in Tunisian crochet. This section comprises 3 rows and serves as an excellent introduction to the forward pass and return pass structure that defines Tunisian crochet.
  • Tunisian Honeycomb Stitch: Featured in the Vanilla Cream section, this stitch creates a honeycomb-like texture with open, airy qualities. The Vanilla Cream section is worked over 10 rows, providing the largest textural element in the blanket.

All sections utilize fundamental crochet abbreviations including chain (Ch), slip stitch (Sl St), half double crochet (HDC), yarn over (YO), forward pass (FWD), and return pass (RTN). The forward pass and return pass are essential components of Tunisian crochet technique, distinguishing it from standard crochet methods.

Materials and Specifications

This pattern is worked with Aran weight cotton yarn in three coordinating colors from the Paintbox Yarns collection:

  • Taupe: 500g
  • Light Champagne: 300g
  • Vanilla Cream: 400g

The pattern requires a UK 6.5mm Tunisian hook, also referred to as a UK 6.5 hook. A Tunisian hook is specifically designed for Tunisian crochet and features a longer shaft than standard crochet hooks to accommodate the multiple active stitches characteristic of this technique. Additional materials include scissors and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches by 8 rows measuring approximately 3 inches in a swatch, allowing crafters to verify their tension before beginning the full project. The finished blanket dimensions are approximately 60 x 100 centimeters, providing a generous size suitable for infant use or as a decorative throw.

Skill Level

This pattern is classified as beginner-level, making it accessible to crafters new to Tunisian crochet techniques. The inclusion of three different stitches provides progressive skill-building while remaining manageable for those with basic crochet knowledge.
