While hiking the Appalachian Trail on an April morning, leaving from a valley lush with the green of spring, it was hard to ignore that the higher the trail climbed, the less green it got and higher up trees and branches had fewer and fewer leaves, some not having put forth any growth at all. The shawl depicts the tulip tree as it starts to burst into life in early spring. Starting with the leaves, the unopened buds higher up and finally the border representing the highest branches with the flowers in all their splendor!

Tulip Tree Knitted Shawl by OwlCat Designs
Project Overview
Tulip Tree is an advanced-level knitted shawl designed by OwlCat Designs, inspired by the natural progression of spring growth along the Appalachian Trail. This top-down triangular shawl captures the visual journey of tulip trees awakening in early spring, progressing from emerging leaves at the base, through unopened buds in the middle sections, to fully bloomed flowers represented in the decorative border at the top.
Design Inspiration and Structure
The shawl's construction mirrors the elevation changes observed while hiking in April, where lower altitudes display lush green foliage while higher elevations show sparse growth and bare branches. This natural progression is translated into the shawl's knitted design, creating a visual narrative from bottom to top that celebrates the seasonal transformation of the tulip tree.
Construction Method
Tulip Tree is worked as a top-down triangular shawl, a construction technique that begins at the apex and expands downward to create the characteristic triangular silhouette. This method allows knitters to try on the shawl as it develops and customize the final size by adjusting the number of rows knit before binding off.
Yarn Requirements and Specifications

- Yardage Required: 400–440 yards (366–402 meters)
- Quantity: One skein completes the project
- Fiber Content: The pattern is shown in Tosh Merino Light, which is 100% Merino Wool, 420 yards per 384 meters
- Yarn Characteristics: Designed to work with most sock yarns, making it accessible to knitters with existing fingering-weight yarn stashes
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
As an advanced-level pattern, Tulip Tree employs sophisticated knitting techniques typical of lace shawl construction. The pattern incorporates stitch work that creates the visual representation of leaves, buds, and flowers through strategic increases, decreases, and yarn-over sequences. The border section features more elaborate stitch patterns that showcase the flowering details of the tulip tree.
The use of fingering-weight yarn in a more substantial construction than traditional delicate lace shawls allows the stitch definition to remain clear and visible while providing practical warmth for spring weather. This approach creates a shawl that works up faster than conventional lace patterns while maintaining the intricate visual interest that advanced knitters seek.
Finished Garment Characteristics
The completed Tulip Tree shawl is a wearable triangle that provides coverage for spring temperatures. The single-skein yardage makes this an ideal project for knitters seeking a substantial finished piece without requiring a large yarn investment, while the advanced difficulty level ensures an engaging knitting experience for experienced crafters.
