Tulip Ripple Blanket by Sew Hooky
Project Overview
The Tulip Ripple Blanket is a beginner-friendly crochet blanket designed by Sew Hooky (Melissa). This downloadable PDF pattern creates a snuggly finished blanket measuring 75cm x 85cm that works up quickly, making it an ideal project for those new to crochet or looking for a fast, satisfying make.
What Is Being Made
A ripple-pattern blanket featuring a classic tulip ripple design. The finished blanket is a medium-sized throw suitable for wrapping, gifting, or adding warmth to any space. The ripple stitch creates the characteristic wave pattern that gives this blanket its distinctive visual appeal and texture.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginners. The ripple stitch is the primary technique, which creates undulating waves across the fabric. The pattern uses a straightforward construction method that builds row upon row, allowing crafters to develop consistent tension and rhythm while working.
Crochet Stitches
- Chain stitch (Ch) – used for the foundation and throughout the pattern
- Ripple stitch – the signature stitch creating the wave pattern
Materials Required
Yarn: The pattern uses Stylecraft Special DK weight yarn in five coordinating colors:
- Yarn A – White (2 balls)
- Yarn B – Lime (1 ball)
- Yarn C – Shrimp (1 ball)
- Yarn D – Dandelion (1 ball)
- Yarn E – Spearmint (1 ball)
Tools: A 4.5mm crochet hook, darning needle for weaving in ends, and scissors.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches across a starting chain by 4 row repeat, measuring approximately 10cm x 6cm. Crafters can use this gauge information to calculate adjustments to the starting chain if they wish to make the blanket larger or smaller than the standard 75cm x 85cm finished measurement.
Pattern Notes
The pattern uses US crochet terminology. Even tension is essential to ensure the finished blanket lays flat and the ripple pattern displays properly. The multi-color yarn selection creates a vibrant, cheerful aesthetic while the DK weight yarn allows the blanket to work up relatively quickly, making it an encouraging project for beginners.
