Tuckerton Cowls by Vanessa Ewing

What Is Being Made

Tuckerton Cowls are reversible knitted cowls designed by Vanessa Ewing. These are circular neckwear pieces that showcase a distinctive textural pattern on both sides, allowing the wearer to display either side as the primary design element. The cowls are available in two yarn weight options, each producing different finished dimensions and drape characteristics.

Techniques and Stitches

The defining technique used in Tuckerton Cowls is knitting in the row below, which creates a puckered stitch texture. This advanced stitch manipulation technique produces the textural interest that characterizes the design. The puckered effect creates dimensional fabric with visual depth, and because the technique produces equally beautiful patterning on both the front and back of the cowl, the piece is truly reversible—either side can be worn facing outward for distinctly different visual presentations while maintaining the same high-quality appearance.

Materials and Yarn Weight Options

Tuckerton Cowls can be crafted in two different yarn weights, each producing distinct finished measurements and aesthetic results:

  • Fingering Weight Version: Requires approximately 400 yards of fingering weight yarn. The pattern specifies Cape May Fiber Co Sock yarn (450 yards per 100 grams, composed of 75% Superwash Merino Wool and 25% Nylon) in the Limited Edition Naturally Dyed Red Cabbage colorway (shown in light blue). An alternative option is Cape May Fiber Co Yak Sock (437 yards per 100 grams, composed of 70% Superwash Merino Wool, 20% Yak, and 10% Nylon) in Marina colorway (shown in teal). This version produces a finished cowl measuring 30 inches in circumference and 9½ inches in height.
  • DK Weight Version: Requires approximately 231 yards of DK weight yarn. The pattern specifies Cape May Fiber Co DK Merino yarn (231 yards per 100 grams, composed of 100% Superwash Merino Wool). This lighter yarn weight produces a finished cowl measuring 40 inches in circumference and 7 inches in height.

Knitting Needles

The pattern calls for US Size 4 (3.5mm) circular knitting needles in a 24-inch length, suitable for working the cowl in the round.

Difficulty Level

Tuckerton Cowls are rated as a beginner-level knitting project, making them accessible to knitters who are new to the craft while still offering interesting textural techniques to explore and develop fundamental skills.
