Product Description
The Travelers Cowl is a quick and easy knit with colorwork. This can be used with multiple colors and be made to be longer in length if desired. The cowl would be a wonderful gift knit and not much yarn is used. I love how it gives you just the right amount of warmth on those chilly days. The name comes from my love of Traveler’s Company Notebooks❤️
Travelers Cowl by Clark and Elle
Project Overview
The Travelers Cowl is a beginner-friendly knitted cowl designed by Clark and Elle. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a versatile neck accessory with a finished circumference of 23 inches and a height of 6 inches after blocking. The cowl features a two-color construction using a charted stitch pattern, making it an ideal project for knitters looking to explore colorwork techniques while maintaining an accessible skill level.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a circular cowl—a tubular neck accessory worn looped around the neck for warmth and style. The cowl is constructed in the round, creating a seamless garment. The design is easily customizable in length by adjusting the number of chart repeats, allowing knitters to create a shorter or longer cowl depending on personal preference and yarn availability.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Circular knitting: The cowl is worked in the round using the join-in-the-round method, eliminating the need for seaming
- Long-tail cast on: The pattern recommends the long-tail cast on or another stretchy cast-on method to ensure adequate stretch and comfort around the neck
- Two-color colorwork: The pattern incorporates Color A (Pinecone) and Color B (Terra Cotta) in a charted design, introducing knitters to basic colorwork techniques
- Needle size adjustment: The pattern suggests switching to a larger needle size for the charted section to accommodate the colorwork, then returning to the smaller size for the finishing ribbing
Stitches Used
- 2x2 ribbing: Knit 2, purl 2 ribbing creates the top and bottom edges of the cowl, providing stretch and a finished appearance. The ribbing is worked for 1.5 inches at the cast-on edge and 1 inch at the bind-off edge
- Charted stitch pattern: A repeating stitch pattern worked over multiples of 4 stitches forms the main body of the cowl. This chart-based design is the focal point of the colorwork and can be repeated as many times as desired to achieve the preferred cowl length
- Stockinette stitch: Four rows of stockinette stitch in Color B provide a transition between the charted section and the final ribbing
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Travelers Cowl is designed to be worked with Clark and Elle Fingering Weight yarn, a 100% single-ply merino wool with a yardage of 400 yards per 100 grams. This 4-ply yarn weight provides excellent stitch definition for both the ribbed sections and the charted colorwork pattern.
Yarn colors used:
- Color A (Pinecone): Approximately 17 grams
- Color B (Terra Cotta): Approximately 28 grams
The total yardage required is approximately 180 stitches cast on, with the exact yardage dependent on the number of chart repeats chosen. The merino wool fiber provides softness, breathability, and natural elasticity ideal for a wearable cowl.
Needles
The pattern calls for circular needles in two sizes: a smaller size for the ribbed sections and a larger size for the charted pattern section. The use of two needle sizes is optional but recommended to ensure proper gauge and fabric consistency throughout the cowl.
Pattern Structure
The cowl is constructed in distinct sections: an initial 1.5-inch ribbed cuff in Color A, followed by the charted stitch pattern worked in both colors with optional needle size changes, four rows of stockinette stitch in Color B, and a final 1-inch ribbed section in Color A before binding off. This structured approach creates a polished, finished garment suitable for both beginners and experienced knitters.
