Tiziano Set Knitting Pattern by Adriafil – Free Downloadable PDF

The Tiziano Set is a charming coordinated knitwear collection from Adriafil, designed for knitters who enjoy combining classic construction techniques with decorative colourwork. This free downloadable PDF pattern includes instructions for two separate garments — a sweater or jumper and shorts — making it a complete, versatile set suitable for a coordinated handknitted outfit.

What Is Being Made

The Tiziano Set consists of two knitted pieces designed to be worn together. The sweater or jumper features a structured body with shaped armholes, a front neckline, and a distinctive back opening, all worked in a combination of colourwork and plain knitting. The shorts complete the set as a coordinating knitted lower garment. Both pieces are worked using Adriafil Avantgarde yarn, and the pattern is designed to produce a cohesive, stylish finished set.

The Sweater or Jumper – Design Details

The sweater is constructed in separate pieces — a back and a front — which are worked flat and then seamed together. The body of the garment features a bold jacquard stripe section worked over 60 rows, creating a decorative colourwork band that gives the sweater its visual character. This jacquard section is then finished with a section worked in plain knit stitch using cream yarn, providing a clean, classic contrast.

Jacquard knitting is a stranded colourwork technique in which two or more colours are carried across the row, with the unused yarn floated or woven in at the back of the work. This creates a dense, structured fabric with excellent stitch definition — ideal for bold stripe and geometric motifs as seen in the Tiziano design.

The back piece includes carefully shaped armholes, begun when the work measures 15.5 cm from the finish of the edge. Armhole shaping is achieved by casting off stitches at each end every 2 rows: first 4 stitches, then 1 stitch three times. This gradual decrease creates a neat, tailored armhole curve. A back opening is introduced when the armhole section measures 15 cm, formed by casting off the 7 centre stitches and then working the two sides separately. The back neckline shaping begins after a further 9 cm, with decreases of 6 stitches, then 3 stitches twice worked centrewise every 2 rows. After 15 cm of neckline shaping, the remaining 17 stitches per shoulder are cast off.

The front is worked in the same manner as the back up to a total measurement of 23 cm from the finish of the edge, at which point the front neckline shaping begins. The 15 centre stitches are cast off and the two sides are finished separately, with further decreases of 3 stitches then 2 stitches worked centrewise every 2 rows to create a smooth, rounded front neckline.

Techniques Used

  • Jacquard stranded colourwork – worked over 60 rows to create decorative stripe patterning across the body
  • Armhole shaping – using stepped cast-offs and paired decreases worked every 2 rows
  • Neckline shaping – both front and back necklines are shaped using centrewise cast-offs and gradual decreases
  • Back opening construction – centre stitches cast off and sides worked independently
  • Flat knitting – pieces are worked back and forth in rows and seamed
  • Finishing in plain knit stitch – the cream yarn section provides a clean contrast to the colourwork

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (jersey / stocking stitch) – used for the plain sections of the garment, including the cream yarn finish
  • Jacquard / stranded colourwork – used for the decor
