Product Description

Elegant and stylish with a spectacular lace border, this top-down semi-circularish shawl transitions from stocking stitch to the billowing border all in single rows.

A lacy edging is knitted along as you go. Shaping is made by paired increases.

Pattern is written out line by line and also charted.

There are two sizes to choose from, a generous shawl and a slightly smaller version. The pattern can easily be scaled up or down. Stitch counts and calculations for this are provided.

Tiong Bahru can be worked in cobweb to heavy laceweight in silk, silk-blends or wool.

Tiong Bahru is a suburb and subway stop on the East-West Line in Singapore - I just like the name, especially the way it’s enunciated with gravitas and faultless clarity on the tube.

Shown in DyeForYarn Silk Lace (grey, size S) and Wollmeise Lace-Garn (red, size L). A suggested substitute is shown below.

Tiong Bahru Shawl by Åsa Tricosa

About This Design

The Tiong Bahru is a bold and elegant crescent shawl featuring a spectacular lace border of billowing flowers and fans. This advanced knitting project combines classic shawl construction with intricate lace patterning, creating a dramatic accessory suitable for experienced knitters seeking a sophisticated finished piece.

What Is Being Made

A crescent-shaped shawl available in two sizes. The small version measures approximately 170cm x 52cm (67" x 20"), while the large version measures approximately 200cm x 65cm (78" x 25"). The shawl is designed to be worn as an elegant wrap or statement accessory.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Åsa's Amazing Tab Cast-On: The pattern begins with this specialized cast-on method, creating a structured foundation for the shawl
  • Stocking stitch: Forms the central body of the shawl, providing a smooth stockinette base
  • Lace edging: Flanks the stocking stitch sections with delicate openwork
  • Lace border: The signature feature showcasing billowing flowers and fans in intricate lace patterns
  • Circular needle knitting: Worked on circular needles to accommodate the shawl's width and construction

Stitches and Stitch Details

The pattern employs advanced lace stitches throughout, particularly in the border section where the flowers and fan motifs are created through yarn overs, decreases, and strategic stitch manipulation. The combination of stocking stitch with lacy edges creates visual contrast and allows the elaborate border design to become the focal point of the finished shawl.

Yarn Requirements

This pattern is designed for laceweight yarn, which creates the delicate, flowing fabric essential to the shawl's elegant drape and intricate lace definition.

  • Small size: Dye For Yarn Lace Silk (Laceweight, 100% silk; 750m / 820yds per 113g) — requires 1 skein. The grey shawl shown in project photos uses Dead Wood colorway
  • Large size: Wollmeise Lace-Garn (Heavy laceweight, 100% Wool, 1591m / 1740yds per 300g) — requires 0.5 skein. The red shawl shown uses Herzblut colorway
  • Alternative yarn suggestions: Any cobweb, laceweight, or fingering/4ply weight yarn works well, including Dye For Yarn Tussah Silk, Silk/Baby Camel/Merino blends, Fyberspates Maria Lace, or Fyberspates Tia Lace

Needles and Notions

  • 3.5mm (US 4) circular needle, 80–100cm (32"–40") length
  • Additional smaller circular needle for provisional cast-on (optional)
  • Crochet hook 2.75–3.5mm (US D or E) size (optional)
  • 5 stitch markers

Skill Level

This pattern is rated advanced, making it suitable for experienced knitters comfortable with complex lace charts, multiple stitch techniques, and shawl construction methods. The combination of specialty cast-on techniques, lace patterning, and intricate border work requires strong foundational knitting skills and the ability to read and follow detailed lace instructions.
