Product Description
The Tin of Chocolates hat is an alternative Christmas hat for those who prefer to avoid the traditional colours and twee sentiment. To me, there can be nothing more festive than gathering with loved ones to share a tin of chocolates, pick ‘n’ mixing our favourites in their jewel toned wrappings (I like the strawberry and orange creams). The hat comes in two circumferences, and can me made slouchy or fitted, simply by pick ‘n’ mixing which sections to knit from the chart. You will need to be comfortable with stranded colourwork in the round.

What is Being Made
The Tin of Chocolates Hat is a festive knitted beanie designed as a modern alternative to traditional Christmas headwear. Rather than conventional holiday colors and sentiments, this hat celebrates the joy of sharing chocolates with loved ones through a vibrant, jewel-toned colorwork design inspired by pick 'n' mix chocolate wrappers in shades of gold, shamrock green, orange, royal blue, and purple against a cerise base color. The design offers versatility in styling, allowing knitters to choose between a slouchy or fitted silhouette by selecting which pattern sections to knit from the included chart.
Sizes and Fit
The Tin of Chocolates Hat is available in two circumferences to suit different head sizes:
- S/M: approximately 20 inches
- L: approximately 23.5 inches
Techniques and Stitches Used
This intermediate-level knitting project requires proficiency with stranded colorwork in the round, a technique where multiple colors are carried simultaneously to create the intricate pattern. The hat is worked circularly using either circular needles or double-pointed needles (DPNs are recommended for working the crown shaping). The pattern is charted, providing a visual guide for color placement and stitch sequences throughout the design. The combination of colorwork and circular construction creates the distinctive jewel-toned aesthetic that mimics the appearance of chocolate wrapper colors.
Materials and Tools
The Tin of Chocolates Hat requires DK weight yarn and appropriately sized needles:
- Needles: 4mm and 3.5mm circular and/or double-pointed needles (sized to match gauge; DPNs recommended for the crown)
- Yarn: King Cole Pricewise DK in Cerise (main color), 1 skein, plus less than 1 skein each of King Cole Dollymix DK in the following colors: Gold, Shamrock, Orange, Royal, and Purple
Gauge
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 28 rows and 22 stitches over 10 centimeters (4 inches) in the charted pattern. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished hat circumference and ensuring the colorwork pattern displays as intended.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with experience in colorwork techniques and circular knitting. Prior familiarity with stranded colorwork and working in the round is recommended before beginning this project.
