Product Description
The Timaru Cowl incorporates travelling lines of twisted stitches on a reverse stockinette background. Done with a super bulky yarn at 1.5 sts/inch, the cowl can be completed in a few hours - making it a perfect last minute gift idea.
I have only offered one size option for the pattern. However, the size can easily be modified by adding increments of 10 stitches. Be aware that you will need more yarn, though.
Materials Used:
Outlaw Yarn Queen Bee - one hank
Size 19US (15-16mm) 24” circular needles
One stitch marker
Tapestry needle
How difficult is this pattern? You should know how to knit in the round on circular needles. And, I recommend practicing a Left Twist before trying this pattern. Left Twists are not difficult, and there are instructions included in the pattern, but if you would like to know more about twisted stitches prior to purchasing the pattern, I suggest this video.
Timaru Cowl by 3 Kittens Needle Arts
What Is Being Made
The Timaru Cowl is a knitted cowl designed by Laura Rasmussen as part of the 3 Kittens Needle Arts collection. This is a super chunky weight cowl that measures 24 inches in circumference and 9.5 inches tall, making it a generous, cozy neckwear piece suitable for layering or wearing as a statement accessory. The cowl is worked in the round on circular needles, creating a seamless tubular construction that provides warmth and comfort without bulk.
Techniques Used
The Timaru Cowl employs in-the-round knitting, a fundamental technique for creating seamless, tubular garments. Knitters begin with a long tail cast-on method to establish 39 stitches on the circular needles, then join carefully to work continuously in rounds. A stitch marker is used to track the beginning of each round, helping maintain consistency throughout the project. The cowl features a left twist cable detail that creates visual interest and texture, elevating the design beyond basic stockinette stitch.
Stitches Used
This intermediate-level pattern combines several essential knitting stitches:
- Knit (K) – the fundamental stitch that forms the base fabric
- Purl (P) – used to create ribbed sections and textural contrast
- Left Twist (LT) – a cable-inspired stitch created by skipping one stitch, knitting the second stitch through the back loop, then knitting the skipped stitch through the front loop before slipping both stitches from the needle together
The stitch pattern alternates between stockinette sections and twisted cable elements, creating a dynamic visual pattern that wraps around the cowl. The gauge is 6 stitches and 10 rows per 4 inches in stockinette, which is typical for super chunky yarn and contributes to the quick knitting time.
Materials
The Timaru Cowl pattern calls for Outlaw Yarns Queen Bee, a 100% wool yarn with approximately 73 yards per skein. The super chunky weight of this yarn means the project works up quickly despite the generous dimensions. Knitters will need US 19/16mm circular needles sized to match the yarn weight for proper gauge, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and a stitch marker to track round progression. The pattern notes that crafters can easily customize the cowl size by adding stitches in increments of 10, though additional yarn will be required for larger versions.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and in-the-round construction but are ready to explore textural techniques like the left twist cable. The straightforward stitch pattern and quick gauge mean the project is very achievable for knitters building their skill set.
