Tiles Knit Hat by Justyna Lorkowska

What is Being Made

Tiles is a beginner-friendly knit hat designed by Justyna Lorkowska. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished hat with a circumference of 54-56 cm (21-22 inches) and a length from brim to top of approximately 26 cm (10.25 inches). The hat features a classic construction with a ribbed brim and colorwork design that showcases five distinct yarn colors in a tile-like pattern.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Tiles hat employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The pattern begins with a German Twisted Cast-On method (also known as Tubular Cast-On), which creates a professional, seamless edge ideal for ribbed sections. The hat is worked in the round using circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming. The design incorporates colorwork elements using five contrasting yarn colors, allowing knitters to practice managing multiple colors while working in the round. The straightforward construction makes this an excellent project for knitters developing their foundational skills.

Stitches Used

  • 1x1 Rib – The primary stitch pattern, worked as *knit 1, purl 1* repeated around. This creates the elastic, textured brim.
  • Knit (k) – Basic knit stitch
  • Purl (p) – Basic purl stitch
  • Knit 2 Together (k2tog) – A decrease stitch used for shaping

Materials and Tools

The Tiles hat requires 1 skein each in 5 colors of Jamieson's Shetland Spindrift yarn, a premium 100% Pure Shetland Wool in 4-ply weight. Each skein provides 105 meters (115 yards) per 25 grams. The pattern is shown in five specific colorways: Nighthawk 1020 (CC1), Gold 289 (CC2), Burnt Ochre 423 (CC3), Moss 147 (CC4), and Leprechaun 259 (CC5). Knitters will need two sizes of needles: 3.0 mm/US #2.5 needles for the cast-on and ribbed sections, and 3.5 mm needles for the main body of the hat. Circular needles are required for working in the round, along with a beginning-of-round marker to track pattern repeats.

Pattern Overview

This beginner-level pattern is ideal for knitters new to colorwork and in-the-round construction. The 4-ply yarn weight combined with the straightforward stitch patterns makes Tiles an accessible introduction to hat knitting, while the multicolor design adds visual interest and teaches color management techniques.
