Thermal Ridged Potholder by My Crochet Space

What Is Being Made

The Thermal Ridged Potholder is a practical kitchen accessory designed to protect hands from hot cookware. This crochet pattern creates a finished potholder measuring 6.5 inches by 7 inches (17cm x 18cm), making it a compact yet functional piece for everyday kitchen use. The design is created by designer Olga Vogel from My Crochet Space and is suitable for crafters with intermediate crochet experience.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

The potholder is constructed using the thermal stitch technique, which is the defining feature of this pattern. Thermal stitches are worked by inserting the hook into stitches from both the current row and the previous row simultaneously. This simultaneous working of two rows creates exceptional thickness and insulation properties, making the finished potholder effective at protecting against heat. The thermal construction method builds density and structure without requiring multiple layers to be sewn together, resulting in a cohesive, durable kitchen textile.

The pattern allows for customization of the finished size. Crafters can adjust dimensions by chaining more or fewer stitches at the foundation and by working additional or fewer rows as desired. The final measurements will vary based on individual tension, yarn weight selection, and hook size used.

Stitches Used

  • Chain (Ch) – Used to create the foundation of the potholder
  • Half Double Crochet (HDC) – The primary stitch structure
  • Thermal Half Double Crochet (THDC) – The signature stitch that creates the insulating thermal effect by working into current and previous row stitches together
  • Slip Stitch (Sl St) – Used for joining and finishing

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern calls for 100% cotton yarn in worsted weight, aran weight, or 10 ply (all equivalent weights). The designer used Fiddlesticks Finch yarn in three colorways: Lilac, Sage Green, and Ecru, with each skein containing 119 yards (109 meters). However, the pattern is flexible and works with any 100% cotton yarn in the specified weight range, allowing crafters to choose their preferred colors and brands.

A 5mm (H-8) crochet hook is recommended for achieving the correct gauge of 15 stitches by 18 rows in Thermal Half Double Crochet over a 4-inch (10cm) square. Additional materials needed include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and scissors for cutting yarn.

Why Cotton and Thermal Construction Matter

Cotton is the ideal fiber choice for potholders because it is heat-resistant and provides natural insulation without synthetic materials. The thermal stitch technique enhances this natural protection by creating a thick, dense fabric through the simultaneous working of two rows, eliminating the need for batting or additional layers. This makes the potholder both functional and elegant, with a finished appearance that showcases the stitch pattern rather than appearing bulky or padded.
