Product Description

Valley Yarns Thecia is a stunning baby cocoon that will keep your little warm and in style knit in Valley Yarns Haydenville. The cocoon is knit in the round from the bottom up to the beginning of the front opening. The button bands or bands that you can sew twill tape with snaps are incorporated into the piece on either side of the heart cable centre. The hearts can be worked in the same colour as the sack or in a contrast colour using intarsia. Options are included for drop-shoulder sleeves or a sleep sack with no sleeves. Valley Yarns Haydenville is an extraordinarily soft blend of superwash Merino and acrylic microfibre. The cable heart pattern is charted and written out, and the intarsia option is in chart form only.

Thecia Baby Cocoon Cardigan in Valley Yarns Haydenville – Pattern #1087 by Susan Baron

Pattern #1087 Thecia, designed by Susan Baron and published by Valley Yarns, is an intermediate-level knitting pattern for an adorable baby cocoon — a cozy, snug garment designed to wrap and comfort newborns and young infants. The pattern offers meaningful versatility: knitters can choose between a version with drop-shoulder sleeves or a sleeveless sack style, and can feature the signature heart cable motif in a solid color or in a contrast color for a charming, eye-catching detail. This flexibility makes the Thecia an ideal project to knit multiple times for different recipients or occasions.

Sizes and Finished Measurements

The Thecia is offered in two infant sizes:

  • 0–6 months: Chest circumference 21 inches, length from shoulder 19½ inches
  • 6–12 months: Chest circumference 23¼ inches, length from shoulder 22 inches

The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in the 0–6 month size. These generous proportions create a cocoon-style fit that wraps snugly around baby while still allowing room for comfortable movement and layering.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern is written specifically for Valley Yarns Haydenville, a worsted-weight yarn with a fiber composition of 60% Superwash Merino Wool and 40% Acrylic Microfiber, available in 100g/220-yard skeins. This blend is particularly well-suited to baby garments: the superwash merino provides exceptional softness against delicate skin, while the acrylic microfiber adds durability and makes the finished piece machine-washable — a practical necessity for busy caregivers.

  • Main Color (MC): 2 (3) skeins of Valley Yarns Haydenville in Lavender or Gold
  • Contrast Color (CC, optional): 1 skein of Valley Yarns Haydenville in Red, used for the heart motifs

Additional materials required include:

  • US 6 (4 mm) 16-inch circular needle and double-pointed needles (dpns)
  • An extra US 6 (4 mm) needle for the three-needle bind-off
  • A cable needle for working the heart cable panel
  • Tapestry needle, stitch markers, and sewing needle with matching thread
  • Twelve ¾-inch buttons for the front button bands

As a thoughtful alternative to buttons, the pattern notes that knitters may omit the buttonholes and instead sew twill tape with snaps to the button bands — a practical option for garments intended for very young infants.

Gauge

The recommended gauge is 22 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, blocked, using US 6 (4 mm) needles. Achieving accurate gauge is especially important in a fitted baby garment, where even small variations can significantly affect the finished size.

Construction and Techniques

The Thecia is a thoughtfully constructed garment that combines several techniques to create a polished, professional result. Key construction and technique highlights include:

  • Bottom-up construction: The cocoon body is cast on at the hem and worked upward, beginning in the round and then transitioning to flat, back-and-forth row knitting once the front opening begins.
  • Worked in the round: The lower body is knitted seamlessly in the round, creating a smooth, join-free fabric ideal for a snug baby cocoon.
  • Integrated button bands: Rather than being picked up and added separately, the button bands are built directly into the piece on either side of the central Heart Cable panel — a technique that results in a neat, cohesive finish.
  • Cable knitting
