Product Description

This pattern was used by my shop as our first "Mystery Sock" project. It is great fun, but not recommended for those who haven't made socks before, due to some unusual techniques. You will need a skein of Chameleon Colorworks "Footsie" or "Bambino". We had this color dyed specially for our shop; it's our logo colors and is not generally available in this colorway. There are many other colorways from Chameleon Colorworks that would look great. You can also substitute just about any fingering weight sock yarn and get good results. This sock is a challenge - but is definitely worth it!

You will need: 36 Mill Hill 6º beads, color 16617 (18 beads for each sock) and 36 Slimline buttons, 3/16", color V202 Red (18 buttons for each sock).

With this pattern, you will learn to add "tabs", buttons, and beads to your knitting. You will need to learn to knit in the round and how to pick up and knit stitches.

The Yarn Deli Mystery Sock I by Sharon Mooney

Project Overview

The Yarn Deli Mystery Sock I is an advanced-level knitting pattern designed by Sharon Mooney for independent knitters seeking a challenging sock project. This downloadable PDF pattern creates fitted socks suitable for large children through adult women, offering an engaging mystery-style knitting experience that combines traditional sock construction with intricate stitch work.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a pair of mystery socks—a sock design where the full stitch pattern unfolds as knitters progress through the pattern, creating an element of surprise and discovery. The finished socks are sized to fit large children through adult women, making them versatile for gifting or personal wear. Mystery socks appeal to experienced knitters who enjoy the challenge of following complex instructions and discovering the final design as they knit.

Yarn and Materials

The Yarn Deli Mystery Sock I calls for approximately one skein of specialty sock yarn. Knitters have two yarn options provided in the pattern:

  • Chameleon Colorworks "Footsie"—a blend of 75% Superwash Wool and 25% Nylon, offering 400 yards at 3.5 ounces, in the colorway "The Yarn Deli"
  • Chameleon Colorworks "Bambino"—a blend of 30% Bamboo, 60% Superwash Merino, and 10% Nylon, also providing 400 yards at 3.5 ounces, in the colorway "The Yarn Deli"

Both yarn options are 4-ply weight, ideal for detailed stitch definition and sock durability. The inclusion of nylon in both blends provides enhanced wear resistance, while the superwash treatments ensure easy care. The choice between wool-dominant and bamboo-dominant fibers allows knitters to select based on personal fiber preferences and climate considerations.

Needles and Tools

This pattern requires a set of five size US 2 double-pointed knitting needles, the standard tool for traditional sock knitting in the round. Additional tools include a split ring stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats and round beginnings, a stitch holder for managing stitches during construction, a cable needle for executing cable stitches if they appear in the mystery pattern, and a beading or sewing needle for finishing techniques such as weaving in ends or adding embellishments.

Knitting Techniques

As an advanced-level pattern, The Yarn Deli Mystery Sock I employs sophisticated knitting techniques that challenge experienced crafters. The mystery format requires knitters to follow detailed written instructions while maintaining awareness of stitch counts and pattern progression. The use of double-pointed needles demands proficiency in managing multiple needles simultaneously and maintaining even tension across needle transitions. The inclusion of a cable needle in the materials list indicates the pattern incorporates cable stitches, which add textural complexity and visual interest to the sock design.

Stitches and Stitch Work

While the specific stitch pattern remains a mystery until knitting progresses, the pattern incorporates cable stitches as evidenced by the cable needle requirement. Cable stitches involve crossing groups of stitches over one another to create twisted, rope-like textures that add dimension and sophistication to sock design. The mystery element means the full stitch sequence—potentially including combinations of knit, purl, cable, and other textured stitches—reveals itself progressively, rewarding knitters with visual discovery as they complete each section of the sock.

Pattern Format and Design Origin

This pattern is presented as a downloadable PDF, allowing immediate access for digital knitting reference. The design originates from Sharon Mooney's original knitting pattern collection, published through The Yarn Deli, an independent yarn shop located in Redlands, California. The mystery sock format reflects contemporary knitting trends that emphasize engagement and surprise throughout the creative process, appealing to knitters who value both technical challenge and the joy of discovery.
