Product Description
This is the crochet top that pops into my mind when you say "boho crochet top." The simple, bikini design and intricate triangle motif on the bodice captures the effortless, exotic and well traveled vibe I think we all want out of the perfect crochet top. I know we all can't travel as much as we'd like at the moment but I hope I can inspire you to make any space you're in right now feel as bohemian and free as I feel in this top! For this pattern, you'll need a 3 (DK) weight yarn and 3.5mm crochet hook. Intermediate skill level is recommended but the trickiest part of the design is the "virus shell" triangle motif on the bodice. I suggest familiarizing yourself with the virus motif to see if it's a good fit for your crochet level.
The Staycation Top by Michelle Greenberg
What Is Being Made
The Staycation Top is a crochet bra top designed by Michelle Greenberg. This garment features structured bra cups paired with a decorative chest band that extends halfway across the chest. The design combines functional lingerie construction with decorative shawl motifs, making it a versatile piece suitable for layering or wearing as a standalone top.
Sizing and Fit
This pattern is available in multiple sizes to accommodate different body types. Bra cup sizes are graded from A through DD, while the band sizes range from S (Small) to XXL (Extra Extra Large) to fit bust measurements up to 34 inches, 36 inches, 38 inches, 40 inches, and 42 inches respectively. The adjustable sizing system allows crafters to customize the fit for their specific measurements.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Staycation Top employs several intermediate-level crochet techniques that require foundational skills and familiarity with shaping methods. The construction begins with separate right and left bra cups that are individually crocheted before being joined together. The chest band is worked flat in rows using a back-and-forth construction method, which creates a structured, stable foundation.
A distinctive feature of this design is the application of a virus shawl motif to the chest band. Crafters have two options for completing this decorative element: they can use a join as you go method, which attaches the shawl motif to the band as it is being crocheted, or they can crochet a separate virus shawl and seam it onto the completed band. The virus shawl technique creates an intricate, lacy geometric pattern that adds visual interest and texture to the garment.
Stitches and Construction Methods
The pattern utilizes single crochet as the primary stitch for gauge measurement and construction. The gauge is established at 21 stitches by 24 rows over a 4x4 inch (10x10 centimeter) swatch worked in single crochet, which helps ensure proper fit and drape of the finished garment.
The pattern includes detailed instructions for increases, which are marked using a stitch marker to track shaping within the bra cups and band sections. This shaping technique is essential for creating the proper contours and support structure of a fitted bra top.
Materials and Tools
This project requires 260 yards (240 meters) of DK weight or light worsted weight yarn, such as Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK. The yarn weight selection provides an appropriate drape and structure for a fitted bra top while maintaining breathability suitable for warm-weather wear.
A 3.5mm (US Size E) crochet hook is recommended for working with the specified yarn weight to achieve the correct gauge. Additionally, a stitch marker is essential for tracking increases throughout the construction process, helping maintain accuracy in shaping the cups and band sections.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with some experience beyond basic skills. The intermediate classification reflects the need to understand shaping techniques, manage multiple sections, and execute the virus shawl motif accurately. Crafters should be comfortable with reading pattern instructions, working increases, and understanding how separate pieces are joined together to form the finished garment.
