Product Description

Of course I had to design the newest Slouchy Hat that is all the rage these days! I like this version because it is a quick knit, super easy, has some cool texture and is reversible! The Worsted Hand Dyes is so delightful to work with but any Worsted weight would work or try doubling a DK!

The Slouchy: Reversible Worsted Weight Knit Hat by Amanda Kaffka

What Is Being Made

The Slouchy is a trendy reversible knit hat designed by Amanda Kaffka. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a hat with a relaxed, slouchy silhouette that can be worn with either side facing outward, offering versatility in styling. The reversible construction means knitters get two distinct looks from a single finished garment, with one side featuring stockinette stitch texture and the reverse side showcasing purl stitch texture.

Knitting Techniques Used

This hat employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The pattern begins with a tubular cast-on method worked in the round using circular needles, ensuring a seamless construction. Knitters will practice ribbed knitting for the cuff, which provides elasticity and a finished edge. The body of the hat utilizes stockinette stitch (knit rounds) alternated with reverse stockinette stitch (purl rounds) to create the reversible effect—this textural variation is what allows the hat to be worn inside-out with equal appeal.

The pattern incorporates decreasing techniques to shape the crown, using knit two together (K2tog) decreases worked in a distributed pattern across multiple rounds. This gradual shaping creates a smooth crown closure. The transition from circular needles to double-pointed needles (DPN) occurs when the stitch count becomes too small for comfortable circular needle work, a standard technique in hat construction.

Stitches Used

  • 2x2 Ribbing: Alternating knit and purl stitches (K2, P2) create the elastic cuff that sits comfortably on the head
  • Stockinette Stitch: Knit rounds that form the smooth, V-textured fabric on one side of the hat
  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch: Purl rounds that create the bumpy texture on the opposite side, enabling the reversible feature
  • Knit Two Together (K2tog): A right-leaning decrease used repeatedly in the crown shaping rounds to reduce stitches from 60 down to the final closure

Materials and Tools

This pattern calls for 2 skeins of Blue Sky Alpacas Worsted Hand Dyes yarn in worsted weight, providing approximately 200 yards of luxurious alpaca fiber. The needles required include 5mm (US 8) 16-inch circular needles for the ribbed cuff and 6mm (US 10) 16-inch circular needles for the main body. Once the crown shaping progresses, 6mm (US 10) double-pointed needles are used to complete the final decreases. Additional notions include a stitch marker to denote the beginning of rounds and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends. The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 stitches over 4 inches in stockinette stitch.

Customization Options

The pattern offers flexibility in the slouch level. Knitters preferring a less slouchy, more fitted hat can reduce the number of repeats of the alternating knit and purl round sequences (Rounds A and B), which are performed 7 times in the standard pattern. This adjustment allows crafters to customize the hat's drape and fit to personal preference without requiring significant pattern modifications.
