This is a complete plug and play shawl. It’s set up so that you can change things up between 3 different stitch patterns for the center panel – making your shawl truly unique to you – and if you’re like me, enabling you to change up your stitches whenever you get bored (I’m squirrely!).
Worked flat, The Science Experiment contains written directions and charts. A handy-dandy progress tracker is included to help you with your rows and stitch counts.
This pattern is easily adapted to other yarn weights, simply keep adding yarn and working options until you’ve reached your desired shawl size!
The Science Experiment Shawl by rhyFlower Knits
What Is Being Made
The Science Experiment is a modular knit shawl designed by rhyFlower Knits as a complete, ready-to-work pattern. This intermediate-level shawl offers creative flexibility by allowing knitters to select from three different stitch patterns for the center panel, making each finished shawl unique to the maker's preferences and creative choices.
Design Features and Construction
This shawl is engineered as a plug-and-play design, meaning the center panel sections can be customized and swapped between different stitch options. The pattern is worked flat rather than in the round, making it accessible for knitters who prefer flat construction methods. A particularly practical feature is the inclusion of a progress tracker to help manage row counts and stitch counts throughout the project, reducing the likelihood of errors in this intermediate-level design.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Science Experiment employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern utilizes increases to shape the shawl and incorporates multiple stitch patterns that can be selected and modified based on knitter preference. The pattern is presented in both written directions and charted format, allowing knitters to work from whichever format they find most intuitive.
Stitches and Abbreviations
The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including:
- K: Knit stitch
- K2tog: Knit 2 together (a decrease method)
- Inc: Increase
The center panel's interchangeable stitch patterns provide opportunities to explore different stitch textures and visual effects within a single shawl design.
Materials Required
Yarn: The Science Experiment uses fingering weight yarn in four size options. Yardage requirements are 500 yards [1050, 1460, 2060] yards (457 [960, 1335, 1884] meters) depending on desired finished size. A distinctive feature of this pattern is that all yardage can be made up of mini-skeins or yarn scraps, which are joined together using the Russian join technique. This makes the pattern ideal for stash-busting and using leftover yarn from other projects.
Needles and Notions: The pattern requires US6 (4 mm) circular needles in a 40-inch (102 cm) length, worked flat. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for joining yarn and finishing, and stitch markers to track pattern sections.
Pattern Format
The Science Experiment is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern from rhyFlower Knits, complete with written instructions, stitch charts, a progress tracker, and abbreviation guide for easy reference during knitting.
