The Puppet Project by Elizabeth Ravenwood
What Is Being Made
The Puppet Project is a knitted toy puppet designed by Elizabeth Ravenwood. This downloadable knitting pattern creates an approximately 9 inches wide by 36 inches tall puppet figure, making it a substantial handmade toy suitable for intermediate knitters. The finished puppet is a complete character project that includes a body, head, facial features, and customizable hair styling options.
Primary Craft and Techniques
This project is created using knitting as the primary construction method. The pattern employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques to achieve its finished puppet form. Key techniques used throughout the project include:
- Provisional cast on methods, executed using a crochet chain technique with a Size E / 3.5 mm crochet hook and waste yarn
- Circular knitting using a 16-inch circular needle for constructing larger sections
- Double-pointed needle work for smaller, more detailed components requiring tight gauge control
- Stitch holder techniques for managing active stitches during construction phases
- Shaping and decreasing methods to form three-dimensional puppet features
Stitches and Construction Details
While the pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches appropriate to the sport and DK weight yarns, the intermediate difficulty level indicates the use of more complex stitch sequences and shaping techniques. The puppet's construction involves multiple components that are knitted separately and then assembled, requiring knitters to understand gauge consistency, proper tension, and joining methods. The facial features, including the mouth and tongue, are created through color changes and strategic stitch placement rather than embroidery, allowing the knitted texture to define the puppet's expression.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Puppet Project is designed to work with sport or DK weight yarn, offering flexibility in yarn choice while maintaining consistent gauge and finished dimensions. The complete material requirements include:
- Main Color (MC): 1100 yards / 1006 meters of sport or DK weight yarn for the primary puppet body and structure
- Contrast Color (CC): 250 yards / 229 meters of sport or DK weight yarn in a mouth color for facial definition
- Hair Color: Approximately 250 yards / 229 meters of sport or DK weight yarn for the wig cap and hair, with the exact yardage dependent on your chosen hairstyle and yarn characteristics
- Accent Color: 15 yards / 14 meters of sport or DK weight yarn in red, pink, or your chosen color for the tongue detail
- Waste Yarn: Smooth yarn in the same or lighter weight than your main color yarn, reserved for provisional cast ons and stitch holders
Needles and Tools
The pattern specifies precise needle sizing to achieve proper gauge and construction quality. Required tools include a Size 3US / 3.25 mm 16-inch circular knitting needle for larger circumference sections, a set of five Size 3US / 3.25 mm double-pointed needles for smaller diameter components, and a Size E / 3.5 mm crochet hook specifically for executing the crochet chain provisional cast on method. All needle sizes should be adjusted as needed to achieve the specified gauge for your chosen yarn.
Skill Level and Project Scope
Classified as an intermediate difficulty project, The Puppet Project is designed for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle multi-component construction, color work integration, and three-dimensional shaping. The 36-inch finished height and detailed puppet features require sustained attention to gauge, consistent tension, and understanding of how individual knitted pieces combine to create the final toy form.
