The Midtown Infinity Scarf by Aunt Janet's Designs

What Is Being Made

The Midtown Infinity Scarf is a reversible cowl-style scarf designed by Janet Jameson. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a finished scarf measuring 18 inches wide by 48 inches long. The reversible construction means there is no designated right or wrong side, making it versatile for wearing in any direction.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is created using the knitting technique. The pattern is specifically designed for knitters of beginner skill level, making it an excellent introduction to lace knitting and stitch pattern memorization. The pattern features an 8-row repeat that knitters will quickly commit to memory, allowing for meditative, rhythmic knitting once the pattern is established.

Stitches and Stitch Pattern

The Midtown Infinity Scarf employs a distinctive lace stitch pattern that creates an openwork design. The pattern uses the following fundamental knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Knit stitch (K): The foundational stitch used throughout the pattern
  • Yarn overs (YO): Multiple yarn overs in varying quantities (YO1, YO2, YO3) create the lace openings and decorative elements
  • Dropped stitches: A unique feature where yarn overs from the previous row are intentionally allowed to fall off the needles rather than being knitted, creating the lace effect without unraveling

The 8-row stitch repeat alternates between plain knit rows and patterned rows featuring the yarn over sequences. Rows 1, 2, 5, and 6 are worked as simple knit stitches across. Rows 3 and 7 introduce the yarn over pattern with specific spacing, while Rows 4 and 8 involve dropping the yarn overs from the previous row to complete the lace construction.

Materials and Yarn Weight

This pattern is worked in aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition while remaining accessible for beginners. The cast-on requires 61 stitches, and the scarf is worked until it reaches approximately 48 inches in length. Knitters will need needles appropriate for aran weight yarn to achieve proper gauge and fabric drape.

Pattern Characteristics

The reversible nature of this scarf makes it a practical and elegant accessory. The lace pattern created by the yarn overs and dropped stitches produces an airy, openwork fabric that is both visually interesting and lightweight, despite the aran weight yarn. This makes the Midtown Infinity Scarf suitable for layering and versatile styling options.
