The Marek Vest is my entry in the Design Wars Back to School Challenge 2014 and was voted "#1 Favorite Design"! www.designwarschallenge.com. This pattern was inspired by and written for my little guy, Marek. He is the absolute love of my life and brings so much joy to our family that I thought it was time to design something especially for him.
This Vest is very warm and cozy boasting 2 crocheted layers, a collar or hood, and after-thought pockets that you can place where you wish, or leave off all together.
This particular pattern includes Child sizes 2-16 with Infant and Adult Size Patterns coming as soon as possible!

The Marek Puffy Vest is a child-sized crocheted waistcoat designed for little ones ranging from toddler through early elementary school ages. This garment was created by designer Sincerely Pam as a special project for her son, Marek. The vest features a fitted silhouette with a button-front closure and is available in five different sizes: 2T-4T, 6-8, 10-12, 14-16, with corresponding width measurements across the shoulders ranging from 9.5 inches to 13 inches, and length measurements from 13.5 inches to 20 inches.
This intermediate-level crochet pattern utilizes fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for crafters with some experience. The primary stitches employed in The Marek Puffy Vest include:
The combination of these stitches creates a structured, fitted vest with dimensional shaping. The use of decrease stitches like sc3tog contributes to the "puffy" effect referenced in the vest's name, allowing the fabric to gather and create visual texture and volume.
The Marek Puffy Vest is worked using worsted weight (#4) yarn, with the designer having used Lion Brand Heartland for the original pattern sample. Specific yardage requirements for each size are provided in the pattern's Special Pattern Notes section.
This project requires two different crochet hooks to achieve proper gauge and construction:
Additional materials needed include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, 3 or 4 toggle buttons depending on the chosen size (3 buttons for sizes 2T-4T through 8, and 4 buttons for sizes 10-12 and 14-16), and scrap yarn in two different colors to serve as stitch markers throughout the construction process.
The pattern specifies a gauge of 12 single crochet stitches and 15 rows over a 4-inch by 4-inch swatch, which is essential to achieve the correct finished measurements. Accurate gauge ensures the vest will fit properly across the shoulders and provide the intended length for each size range.
