Product Description
The rainbow flag has been a symbol of LGBTQ community, especially lesbians and gays. The colors of all spectrums symbolize the LGBTQ identity and solidarity.
Previously I released a head/neckwear pattern for gender diversity, using color schemes for Transgender, Genderfluid and Nonbinary communities.
In this LGB Cowl series, I am celebrating the diverse communities of L (Lesbians), G (Gays), and B (Bisexuals).
The double-knit pattern will produce a reversible knitted cowl with mirrored images on both sides.
The L Cowl Knitting Pattern by Duke of Nikko
What Is Being Made
The L Cowl is a reversible knitted cowl designed to celebrate lesbian identity and community pride. This neckwear piece features a double-knit construction that produces mirrored images on both sides, making it wearable and visually striking from either direction. The pattern is part of the LGB Cowl series, which honors diverse LGBTQ communities through thoughtful color symbolism and inclusive design.
Design Inspiration and Symbolism
The L Cowl draws inspiration from the rainbow flag and its significance within the LGBTQ community. The color schemes used in this pattern specifically represent lesbian identity and solidarity. This design follows the designer's previous work celebrating gender diversity through head and neckwear, extending that commitment to representing the broader spectrum of sexual orientation within the LGBTQ community.
Knitting Techniques
Double Knitting is the primary technique used in this pattern. Double knitting is an advanced colorwork method that creates a reversible fabric with two distinct sides, each displaying a mirror image of the design. This technique involves working with two colors simultaneously in the round, manipulating stitches to create the interlocking pattern that produces the reversible effect. The double-knit method requires careful attention to stitch placement and color dominance to achieve clean, crisp pattern definition on both sides of the finished cowl.
Stitches and Construction
The pattern utilizes double-knit stitches worked in the round to construct the cowl. Working in the round ensures a seamless, tubular fabric that requires no seaming. The reversible nature of the double-knit technique means that each stitch contributes to both the front and back pattern simultaneously, creating the mirrored imagery characteristic of this construction method.
Available Sizes
- Adult Small: 19 inches (48 centimeters) circumference, 8 inches (20 centimeters) high
- Adult Large: 25 inches (63 centimeters) circumference, 8 inches (20 centimeters) high
Skill Level and Requirements
This pattern is rated as Intermediate difficulty. Knitters should have solid foundational skills and specific experience with double knitting in the round before beginning this project. The technique requires understanding of colorwork principles, tension management with multiple colors, and the spatial awareness needed to maintain pattern consistency throughout circular knitting.
Materials
The pattern calls for 4-ply yarn weight, which provides the appropriate thickness for creating well-defined colorwork stitches in double knitting. The suggested yarn is Anzula Luxury Fibers Squishy, a premium yarn option. Knitters will need circular needles appropriate for the yarn weight and finished circumference, along with stitch markers and other standard knitting notions for working in the round.
Pattern Format
This design is available as a downloadable PDF, making it accessible for immediate use. The pattern includes comprehensive instructions for both size options and references additional resources, including a link to the designer's eBook for further learning and pattern exploration.
