This skirt contains a short version and a maxi version with a split. You will need 10 different colours of any fingering weight yarn and a 3.5mm crochet hook and some elastic which will be sewn into the top of the skirt to bring it in at the waist. You can use any elastic, I used 2mm thin but if you prefer extra hold, you can use thicker elastic.

The Florette Skirt by Alanna Miall
What is Being Made
The Florette Skirt is a customizable crochet skirt available in two lengths: a short skirt version and a maxi skirt version. The pattern is designed by Alanna Miall and comes as a downloadable PDF. The sample size provided fits UK size 6 (extra small) but is easily customizable to different measurements. This intermediate-level crochet project creates a vibrant, multi-colored skirt suitable for various body sizes and preferences.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This crochet skirt is constructed using intermediate-level techniques with 4ply fingering weight cotton yarn worked in 10 different colors. The multi-color approach creates visual interest and requires color changes throughout the pattern. The skirt features a waistband finished with elastic for comfort and security. The pattern requires taking specific body measurements including hips (the biggest part around your bottom half), waist, and waist to ankle height for the maxi version to ensure proper fit and customization.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern documentation provided, the intermediate difficulty level indicates the use of fundamental crochet stitches combined in a structured way. Stitch markers are required during construction, suggesting the pattern involves multiple sections or color transitions that need to be tracked. A tapestry needle is used for finishing, indicating seaming or weaving in yarn ends is part of the construction process.
Materials Required
- Yarn: 4ply fingering weight cotton yarn in 10 colors. For the short skirt version: 350g (1200 meters) for extra small size. For the maxi skirt version: 600g (2100 meters) for extra small size. The pattern specifies Cotton Kings 4ply yarn from Hobbii as the yarn used in the sample.
- Hook: 3.5mm crochet hook
- Notions: Elastic for waistband (2mm minimum, though thicker elastic is suggested for better support), tapestry needle for finishing, scissors, tape measure, and stitch markers
Pattern Customization
The Florette Skirt pattern is designed to be easily customizable beyond the sample extra small size. Crafters should take three key measurements before beginning: hips (the fullest part around the bottom half), waist, and waist to ankle height for maxi versions. These measurements allow the pattern to be adjusted to fit different body types and create either a short or maxi length skirt according to personal preference.
