The Fishcloth by Louisa Noble
What is Being Made
The Fishcloth is a versatile knitted dishcloth, washcloth, or facecloth designed by Louisa Noble. This whimsical project is equally suited for kitchen or bathroom use, featuring a fish-shaped design that measures approximately 21cm (8 inches) long and 14cm (5.5 inches) high. The finished cloth is soft, absorbent, and durable, making it a practical and charming addition to any home.
Construction Method
The Fishcloth is knitted in one continuous piece from tail to nose, eliminating the need for any sewing or finishing work. This seamless construction method creates a cohesive, professional-looking garment that requires minimal assembly. The design uses a strategic color-work approach with two contrasting yarns to create the fish motif and details.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental techniques:
- Ribbed Pattern: The pattern begins with a 1x1 rib stitch (alternating knit and purl stitches), which creates texture and elasticity in the tail section
- Needle Gauge Transitions: The pattern strategically changes needle sizes throughout construction—beginning with UK size 7 / US size 7 / 4.5mm needles, transitioning to UK size 9 / US size 5 / 3.75mm needles, and finishing with UK size 10 / US size 3 / 3.25mm needles—to create varying fabric densities and shaping
- Color Work: Two distinct yarn colors (white and pink) are incorporated to create the fish design and facial features
- Basic Knit and Purl: The foundational stitches of knitting are used throughout the pattern to build the cloth structure
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Fishcloth is designed to be worked in 100% cotton DK weight yarn for optimal results. Cotton yarn is recommended because it produces a soft, absorbent, and long-lasting finished cloth that is ideal for washing and cleaning purposes. The specific yarn requirements are:
- 12 grams of white cotton DK yarn (Yarn A)
- 10 grams of pink cotton DK yarn (Yarn B)
Three pairs of needles in different sizes are required to complete this project, allowing the knitter to adjust fabric density as the design progresses from the tail through the body to the nose of the fish.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable working with multiple needle sizes and color changes within a single project.
