Product Description

Worked in the round, this cotton top makes a simple, summer knitting project. It's a classic design, with an easy knit, purl stitch pattern. The four row stitch pattern is written and charted for ease of use. Optional waist shaping instructions are included for those who would like a more figure hugging fit. The edges are trimmed with simple garter stitch bands.

The size numbers are the finished measurement of each garment. Make sure the size chosen includes the appropriate amount of ease for your personal preferences. A minimum of 2 inches (5 cm) is recommended. To verify, measure an existing garment in a similar weight for comparison. The garment photographed is a size 38.5 inch (98 cm) and is shown on a size 36 inch (91.5 cm) mannequin.

The top is worked in the round, from the bottom up on circular needles in one piece. The sleeves are worked separately. All pieces are joined and garment yoke is worked seamlessly to the neckline. Markers indicate the position of the garment

What is Being Made

The Diana Maberly Top is a classic summer knitting project designed by Robin Hunter. This garment is a cotton top worked in the round, offering a timeless silhouette with practical construction. Available in six sizes ranging from 32 inches to 47 inches at the bust, this design accommodates a wide range of fit preferences. The top features optional waist shaping instructions, allowing knitters to customize the fit from a relaxed, straight cut to a more figure-hugging silhouette based on personal preference.

Techniques and Construction Methods

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental techniques suitable for knitters with basic experience. The garment is worked in the round, which creates a seamless construction and eliminates the need for seaming. The long tail cast on begins the project, and knitters maintain stitches throughout the shaping process. The pattern incorporates decreases and increases to achieve optional waist shaping, requiring knitters to maintain stitch pattern accuracy while simultaneously working shaping instructions. The top is finished with simple garter stitch bands at the edges, providing a clean, classic trim. Casting off completes the project. The straightforward construction makes this an excellent intermediate project for knitters looking to develop shaping skills without excessive complexity.

Stitches Used

The Diana Maberly Top features a four-row stitch pattern combining knit and purl stitches, referred to as the Hurdle Stitch Pattern. This alternating knit and purl pattern creates visual texture and interest while remaining accessible to intermediate knitters. The pattern is provided in both written and charted formats, allowing knitters to follow their preferred method. Garter stitch bands trim the edges, creating a simple, refined finish that complements the main stitch pattern.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Diana Maberly Top is designed to be worked in Dye-Version DK Cotton in the colorway Hunter. This yarn is 100% cotton, making it ideal for a breathable summer garment. The yardage requirement varies by size: 3 skeins for the smallest size (32 inches), increasing to 5 skeins for the larger sizes (41.5 inches and above). Each skein contains approximately 230 yards (252 meters) and weighs 4.5 ounces (125 grams).

The pattern calls for #6 US (4 mm) circular needles. The gauge is established at 20 stitches and 25 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in the Hurdle Stitch Pattern using the specified needle size after blocking, ensuring proper fit and drape in the finished garment.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, The Diana Maberly Top requires foundational knitting skills including long tail cast on, knit and purl stitches, decreases, increases, and the ability to cast off. Knitters must be comfortable working in the round and maintaining stitch pattern consistency while executing shaping instructions. This project provides excellent practice for developing intermediate skills in a practical, wearable garment.
