The Dandelion Fairy Crochet Doll

What Is Being Made

The Dandelion Fairy is an intermediate-level amigurumi doll designed by Leanne Vickery, based on the Herb Fairies series by Kimberley Gallagher. This finished crochet doll measures 30 cm (12 inches) in height and features a complete fairy character with articulated limbs, detailed facial features, and decorative wings. The design combines multiple yarn colors to create distinct body parts including skin, clothing, hair, and wing elements.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This project employs fundamental amigurumi construction techniques, which involve crocheting pieces in the round and stuffing them to create three-dimensional forms. The doll is built by creating individual components—legs, body, arms, head, and wings—which are then assembled together. The use of polyester stuffing throughout creates structure and shape, while wire reinforcement (12 gauge aluminium florists wire) is incorporated into the limbs and wings to allow for poseable positioning. Florists tape is used to wrap and secure the wire within the crochet fabric.

Fabric stiffener (specifically Plaid Stiffy brand) is applied to the wings to give them a defined, structured appearance. Wire cutters and pliers are essential tools for preparing and shaping the internal wire framework. The assembly process involves strategic placement of stuffing and careful stitching to join all components securely.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes single crochet (sc) as the primary stitch throughout the construction. The gauge is established at 6 single crochet stitches equaling 2.5 cm (1 inch), which ensures proper sizing and structural integrity of the finished doll. Single crochet creates a tight, dense fabric ideal for amigurumi work, preventing stuffing from showing through and providing durability for a handmade doll that may be handled frequently.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Dandelion Fairy pattern calls for DK weight yarn (also referred to as 8 ply in the pattern), which is worked with three different crochet hook sizes:

  • 3.75 mm hook (primary construction)
  • 2.75 mm hook (for detailed work)
  • 1.30 mm hook (for fine details)

The yarn palette includes four colors of 4 Seasons brand yarn:

  • Main Color (MC) - Pale Pink (4 Seasons Marvel 8 ply): Used for the skin tone of the doll's face, neck, and exposed body areas
  • C1 - Chocolate (4 Seasons Stallions 8 ply): Creates the pants or lower body clothing
  • C2 - Bottle Green (4 Seasons Stallion 8 ply): Forms the top or upper body garment
  • C3 - Lemon Sorbet (4 Seasons Marvel 8 ply): Used for the delicate fairy wings
  • C4 - Sungold (4 Seasons Marvel 8 ply): Creates the hair color

Embroidery cotton in multiple colors (#5 weight) provides fine detail work: black for eyes and eyebrows, white for eye highlights, brown for additional eye definition, and dark pink for lips. A tapestry needle and yarn needle facilitate assembly and embroidery work.

Additional Materials and Notions

Beyond yarn and hooks, the project requires several specialized materials to complete the fairy character. Polyester stuffing fills all body components to create a soft, cuddly finished doll. A pom pom maker is used to create textured hair elements. Hot glue secures embellishments and components during assembly. Sharp scissors are essential for cutting yarn and trimming excess materials cleanly.

The wire framework uses 12 gauge aluminium florists wire (preferably white from Spotlight) to create poseable limbs and wings. If white wire is unavailable, white florists tape can be wrapped around standard wire. Wire cutters and pliers are necessary tools for cutting and shaping the wire to the required lengths and angles.

Skill Level and Pattern Format

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle multi-component assembly projects. The downloadable PDF format allows crafters to work at their own pace, with the ability to reference instructions and gauge information throughout the project. The intermediate classification reflects the complexity of assembling multiple pieces,
