Tempest Wave Pocket Shawl by Jane Reed
What Is Being Made
The Tempest Wave Pocket Shawl is a crocheted wrap-style shawl featuring integrated pockets, designed by Jane Reed of Tempest Rose Crafts. This downloadable crochet pattern creates a versatile garment suitable for layering and everyday wear, with the added functionality of practical pockets woven into the design.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental crochet construction methods appropriate for intermediate-level crafters. The shawl is worked in rows using a stitch multiple system, specifically multiples of 4 stitches plus 2, with an additional turning chain. The pattern utilizes a two-hook technique during construction: a larger 8mm hook is used for the foundation chain to establish the base, then the work transitions to a 7mm hook for the remainder of the shawl. This hook-switching approach allows for controlled tension and shaping throughout the project.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The pattern is written in US crochet terminology and incorporates standard crochet stitches suitable for creating wave-like textures and drape. The turning chain structure is integral to the pattern: chain 1 does not count as a stitch throughout the work, while chain 3 counts as the first stitch of each row. This distinction is essential for maintaining proper stitch counts and pattern alignment across rows.
