Product Description

This hat is worked in the round from the bottom up. The simple cables emerge from the twisted rim. Starting with the darkest colour and fading into the lightest and back again, the hat combines simple cables on a Garter Stitch background with some simple colour work. The crown decreases in pattern while maintaining the colour order and cable design.

This hat was designed using five 25g mini skeins of hand dyed Arran yarn from An Irish Knit Odyssey in a fade.

An Irish Knit Odyssey Arran (100% Wool; 44 yards [40 meters]/25 grams) Blue Fade (set of 5 mini skeins of 25g each, total 125g) While the pattern contains instructions for the large sizes, the kit only contains enough for the small or medium sizes. There is possibly enough yarn for the large but CC1 is too close to call! Replacing the last CC1 section with CC5 could be an option also.

Téad Hat by Ciara Ní Reachtnín

What is Being Made

The Téad hat is a hand-knitted beanie designed by independent designer Ciara Ní Reachtnín. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a fitted, crown-decreasing hat worked seamlessly in the round from the bottom up. The design features a striking color fade that progresses from the darkest shade through to the lightest and back again, creating a gradient effect throughout the finished garment. The hat is available in four sizes: small, medium, large, and extra-large.

Techniques Used

The Téad hat employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive appearance. The pattern begins with a twisted rim at the cast-on edge, which creates a decorative and structured foundation for the hat. Cable knitting forms the primary textural element, with simple cables emerging directly from this twisted rim and continuing up the body of the hat. The hat is worked in the round using circular needles, ensuring a seamless construction. Color work is incorporated throughout, with the yarn's natural fade creating a gradient effect from dark to light to dark again. The crown shaping is accomplished through decreases worked in pattern, meaning the cable and color designs are maintained even as stitches are reduced toward the top of the hat.

Stitches Used

  • Garter Stitch – serves as the background stitch, providing texture and contrast to the cable elements
  • Cable stitches – simple cable patterns that emerge from the twisted rim and continue as the primary design feature
  • Twisted stitches – used to create the decorative twisted rim at the hat's lower edge
  • Decreases – worked in pattern during the crown shaping to maintain the cable and color design integrity

Materials

The Téad hat pattern calls for Arran weight yarn, though the pattern accommodates DK and worsted weights as well. The recommended yarn is An Irish Knit Odyssey Arran, a 100% wool yarn available in the Blue Fade colorway. The design uses five 25-gram mini skeins for a total of 125 grams of yarn, creating the gradient fade effect. Each mini skein contains 44 yards (40 meters) of yarn. Knitting is worked on 5 mm needles or the size required to achieve the correct gauge. The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches by 25 rows over a 10 centimeter (4 inch) square in Stocking Stitch when blocked, with one cable repeat measuring 6 centimeters in width.
