Product Description
Tanilba Bay is a beautiful shallow bay in the Port Stephens area of Australia. It is flat and at low tide there are rivulets and pools of water left. Wading birds including the Eastern Curlew can be seen all along the bay feeding.
This wrap is inspired by the landscape and the water at low tide. It has simple straight ridges and meandering rivulets.
The two patterns alternate - sand and water. Sand is a simple eyelet pattern using ssk and Water is a 11 stitch vertical zigzag with twisted rib in one half. It's quick to do and looks great.
The overall effect is a gentle airy wrap that can be worn over summer or evening wear or snuggled into in the colder temperatures.

What is Being Made
The Tanilba Bay Wrap is a long, soft, and drapey knitted wrap designed for versatile styling. Inspired by Tanilba Bay, a shallow bay in Port Stephens in New South Wales, Australia, this wrap captures the aesthetic of rippled sand, small rivulets, and shallow water patterns visible at low tide. The finished piece functions as an elegant drape for summer dresses or as a cozy layer for cooler evenings, offering both style and comfort for year-round wear.
Design Inspiration and Characteristics
The wrap draws its visual character from the natural textures and patterns found in the tidal landscape of Tanilba Bay. The design incorporates ripples, rivulets, and references to the curlew wading birds that inhabit the area. The resulting fabric is described as gentle, airy, and highly drapeable, making it suitable for both warm-weather styling and layering during colder seasons.
Knitting Techniques and Stitch Pattern
This intermediate-level knitting project features a sophisticated lace construction. The pattern consists of an 11 stitch, 32 row repeat that alternates between two key elements: a ripple lace pattern and a simple eyelet section. This alternating structure creates the visual interest and textural variation that mimics the natural patterns of sand and water at low tide. The lace techniques used produce the airy, open-work quality characteristic of wraps designed for elegant draping.
Yarn and Materials
The sample shown is worked in 4-ply fingering weight yarn from Eden Cottage Yarns, specifically the Bowland Yarn in the colorway Campanula. This yarn weight and fiber choice contribute to the soft, drapey quality of the finished wrap. The fingering weight allows for fine stitch definition while maintaining the lightweight, breathable fabric suitable for both layering and standalone wear.
Skill Level
Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, the Tanilba Bay Wrap is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with lace patterns and manage stitch repeats over multiple rows.
