Product Description
If you are like me and got hooked on a Nintendo Switch game, your Switch probably took a beating in your purse. So I made this cover to just protect the screen when you are carrying it from place to place. This beginner friendly pattern is a perfect stash busting project to get rid of cotton yarn lying around. It's a fun project that works up quickly. This pattern is written for the larger Nintendo Switch but has instructions to size it down if you need to.
(This isn't a case, that will protect it from injury, just a cover to help the screen from getting scratched. I'm not responsible if your Switch is damaged while in this. This is just a fun project to decorate your Switch essentially.)
Switchin' It Up Nintendo Switch Cover
What Is Being Made
The Switchin' It Up Nintendo Switch Cover is a protective crocheted case designed by Madison Ours to fit and safeguard a Nintendo Switch gaming console. This beginner-friendly project creates a fitted cover that keeps the device secure while allowing for easy access and portability. The cover features a button closure system for convenient opening and closing.
Craft and Technique Overview
This project is created using the crochet technique, making it an ideal choice for beginners looking to develop fundamental skills. Crochet is a fiber craft that uses a single hook to create interlocking loops of yarn, resulting in a flexible, textured fabric perfect for protective garments like device covers. The relatively straightforward construction and beginner difficulty level make this an accessible project for crafters new to crochet or those seeking a quick, satisfying make.
Stitches Used
The Switchin' It Up cover employs several essential crochet stitches to create its structure and texture:
- Chain (Ch): The foundation stitch used to create the base of the project and establish stitch counts for rows
- Single Crochet (Sc): A basic, tight stitch that provides structure and durability to the cover
- Double Crochet (Dc): A taller stitch that adds height and creates varied texture throughout the piece
- Lemon Peel Stitch: A special stitch technique featured in this pattern that combines single crochet and double crochet stitches together. The lemon peel stitch creates an attractive, textured surface by decreasing stitches strategically—accomplished by inserting the hook into multiple consecutive stitches, pulling up loops, and working them together in a specific sequence to merge stitches and create visual interest
The pattern also incorporates skip (sk) instructions to shape the cover and create shaping details as needed.
Materials and Tools Required
This project requires minimal supplies, making it economical and accessible:
- Hook: 5.0 mm crochet hook
- Yarn: Approximately 140 yards of worsted weight (weight 4) cotton yarn. The pattern specifies Sugar n' Cream brand cotton yarn, with nearly a full skein required for completion. Cotton yarn is ideal for device covers as it provides structure, breathability, and durability
- Notions: One ¾ inch button for the closure mechanism
- Additional Tools: A yarn needle for weaving in ends and finishing, a slightly smaller needle sized to fit through button holes for secure attachment, and scissors for cutting yarn
Pattern Structure
The pattern includes clear abbreviations and repeat instructions marked with asterisks (*), allowing crafters to follow row-by-row construction with ease. Special stitch instructions are provided with detailed explanations of the lemon peel stitch technique, including references to visual tutorials for additional support. This structured approach ensures that even beginners can successfully complete the project by following the step-by-step guidance.
