Product Description
Featured on Crystal Palace's July newsletter!
Sweet Melissa is a lacy summer sock knit with a cotton/elastic yarn. The pattern comes in two sizes with two different cuff options and are a mirror image of each other.
The S/M size will fit a calf circumference of up to 25cm (10") and the M/L will give you up to 30cm (12") of calf circumference.
These socks knit up quickly using 2.75mm (US#2) DPN's with an easy to remember pattern repeat. You will also need a set of 2.5mm (US#1 1/2) DPN's if you would like to make the picot cuff.
You will need 364 - 440 yards (333 - 402 m) of fingering weight yarn to make one pair of socks.
Sweet Melissa Lacy Summer Socks by Char Kohl
Project Overview
Sweet Melissa is an advanced knitting pattern for lacy summer socks designed by Char Kohl. This downloadable PDF provides detailed instructions for creating a pair of elegant, openwork socks featuring decorative lace elements and customizable cuff options. The pattern is suitable for experienced knitters seeking a sophisticated sock project with refined stitch work and shaping techniques.
What is Being Made
This pattern produces a complete pair of adult socks available in two sizes: Small/Medium (fitting foot lengths of 9 to 10 inches with up to 10 inches leg circumference) and Medium/Large (fitting foot lengths of 10 to 11 inches with up to 12 inches leg circumference). The socks feature lacy openwork throughout the leg and are designed with two distinct cuff options to suit different aesthetic preferences.
Cuff Options and Construction
The pattern includes instructions for two different cuff styles. The picot cuff option uses the provisional cast-on method, creating a decorative finished edge. Both cuff options can be worked on either size, offering flexibility in the final appearance of the finished socks.
Techniques Used
- Provisional Cast-On Method: Used to create a reversible edge that allows for grafting or picking up stitches for a finished picot cuff
- Circular Knitting: Socks are constructed in the round using double-pointed needles to create seamless fabric
- Lace Knitting: The pattern incorporates openwork stitches and yarn overs to create decorative lacy elements throughout the leg
- Heel and Gusset Shaping: Structured heel construction with gusset decreases for a custom fit
- Toe Shaping: Graduated decreases to close the toe end smoothly
- Mirror Image Construction: The Medium/Large size features separate leg patterns for the first and second sock to create a matching pair with mirrored lace designs
Stitches and Stitch Details
The pattern employs lace stitches created through yarn overs and decreases to form the openwork design characteristic of summer socks. The gauge is established at 8 stitches per inch, which is typical for lightweight sock construction. The picot cuff utilizes standard knit and purl stitches combined with yarn overs to create the decorative picot edge detail.
Materials Required
Yarn for Small/Medium: 2 balls of Crystal Palace Panda Cotton Solid (364 yards total)
Yarn for Medium/Large: 2 balls of Co Ba Si by HiKoo (440 yards total)
Needles and Tools: Set of 4 double-pointed needles (dpns) in US #2 for main sock construction; Set of 4 dpns in US #1 1/2 for picot cuff only; Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing
Pattern Structure and Sizing
The pattern provides comprehensive instructions for both sizes, with Small/Medium measurements given first and Medium/Large measurements provided in parentheses or labeled separately. The Medium/Large size includes separate detailed instructions for the heel, gusset, and toe shaping on both the first and second sock to ensure proper mirror-image construction. This thoughtful approach allows knitters to create a perfectly matched pair with symmetrical lace patterning.
Skill Level
Rated as advanced, this pattern is designed for experienced knitters comfortable with lace knitting techniques, circular needle construction, and the precision required for fitted sock shaping. The use of double-pointed needles and the complexity of the lace stitch work require solid foundational knitting skills.
