Sweet Cecilia Bonnet by The Moule Hole
Project Overview
The Sweet Cecilia Bonnet is a beginner-friendly crochet hat design created by The Moule Hole. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a charming bonnet suitable for crafters new to crochet who want to create a finished, wearable garment with classic styling and elegant construction.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a bonnet—a fitted head covering with a structured shape. The Sweet Cecilia Bonnet features a design that combines functionality with aesthetic appeal, making it an ideal project for those learning fundamental crochet techniques while producing a polished final product.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Sweet Cecilia Bonnet employs a signature stitch pattern called the Sweet Cecilia Stitch, which alternates rows of half double crochet with rows of half double crochet and chain one skip one stitch combinations. This creates visual texture and structural interest throughout the garment.
- Half Double Crochet (HDC): The primary stitch used throughout the pattern, providing a medium-height, dense fabric suitable for hat construction
- Chain Stitches: Used strategically within the Sweet Cecilia Stitch pattern to create openwork elements and shaping
- Stitch Placement: All half double crochet stitches are worked beneath the three loops of the previous row, a technique that ensures consistent fabric quality and proper gauge
The pattern includes a video tutorial to guide crafters through the Sweet Cecilia Stitch technique, making it accessible for beginners who benefit from visual instruction.
Materials Required
The Sweet Cecilia Bonnet is designed to work with DK weight yarn (also called Lightweight number 3 yarn). The pattern specifies a 3.5mm crochet hook (U.S. size E-4) or the size needed to obtain proper gauge.
The designer used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in two colorways: Vanilla Cream (color 408) and Dusty Rose (color 442). This yarn choice creates a soft, breathable fabric ideal for a bonnet, though any DK weight yarn in similar colors will work. Refer to the pattern's yarn chart for specific yardage requirements based on your color choices and desired finished size.
Gauge and Construction Standards
Proper gauge is essential for this pattern. The Sweet Cecilia Bonnet requires 22 stitches and 16 rows over a 10cm × 10cm (4 × 4 inch) square when worked in the alternating rows of the Sweet Cecilia Stitch pattern. Achieving correct gauge ensures the bonnet fits properly and maintains the intended drape and structure of the design.
