Product Description
Sweater & Tank Top Knitting Pattern in Stylecraft Impressions & Grace — Pattern Summary
This downloadable PDF from Stylecraft contains two complete knitting designs: a classic fitted Sweater and a sleeveless Tank Top. Both garments are worked in Stylecraft Impressions and Stylecraft Grace yarns at Aran weight, making them ideal for knitters with an intermediate skill level who want to create stylish, wearable knitwear with a contemporary finish. The pattern is notably inclusive, covering a wide range of sizes from 81–86 cm (32–34 in) up to 122–127 cm (48–50 in) bust, with five size options in total.
About the Two Designs
Design One: The Sweater
The Sweater is a full-length knitted jumper featuring long sleeves. It is constructed with a structured ribbed welt before transitioning into a textured stitch pattern that combines knit and purl stitches in a defined repeat. The sweater offers a generous, comfortable fit with actual measurements ranging from 108 cm to 148 cm across the five sizes, giving ease for a relaxed yet flattering silhouette.
- Full Length: 60 cm to 71 cm depending on size
- Sleeve Length: 46 cm to 48 cm depending on size
- Actual Bust Measurement: 108–148 cm (42½–58¼ in)
The sweater begins at the back with a thumb method cast-on using 3.75 mm needles, working 17 rows of 1×1 rib to create a neat, stretchy welt. A shaping row on the wrong side uses make 1 (m1) increases spaced evenly across the row to expand the stitch count before the main body begins. The knitter then switches to 4.5 mm needles for the body, where the textured stitch pattern is established — a combination of knit stitches and purl stitches arranged in a structured repeat that creates visual interest and fabric depth.
Design Two: The Tank Top
The Tank Top is a sleeveless version that shares the same yarn, needle sizes, and core stitch construction as the sweater, but is worked to a shorter length and without sleeves. It is a versatile layering piece that works equally well on its own or over a shirt.
- Full Length: 57 cm to 68 cm depending on size
- Actual Bust Measurement: 108–148 cm (42½–58¼ in)
Like the sweater, the tank top begins with a 1×1 rib welt on 3.75 mm needles, followed by the same increase row to transition into the main body stitch pattern on 4.5 mm needles. The absence of sleeves makes this a slightly quicker project and a great option for knitters who want to build confidence with the textured pattern before tackling the full sweater.
Techniques Used
Both designs draw on a range of knitting techniques that are well within reach for an intermediate knitter. The combination of ribbing, increases, and a repeating textured pattern gives the knitter a satisfying variety of skills to practise and apply.
- Thumb method cast-on — used to begin both garments, creating a flexible and elastic edge well suited to ribbed welts
- 1×1 Rib (k1, p1) — worked over the welt section to provide stretch and structure at the lower edges
- Make 1 (m1) increases — used on the transition row to increase stitch count evenly before the main body pattern begins
- Textured stitch pattern — a repeating combination of knit and purl stitches (including sequences such as k1, p3 and k18 within the repeat) that creates a visually striking fabric surface
- Wrong-side shaping rows — purl-based increase rows that distribute new stitches evenly across the width of the fabric
- Needle changes
