Product Description

Oversized striped sweater, worked flat in pieces, from the bottom up. Pieces are wet-blocked then sewn together. Front shoulders are longer than back shoulders and wrap to the back. The original edge of the front neckline allows two options for the neckline design, open edge and with a neckband. Neckband is picked up around the neckline and works flat. Selvedge stitches are included in the schematic measurements, but not in the finished bust measurement above. Choose the size with 6–10” of positive ease.

SVISLAČ Striped Knit Sweater by Veta Romanenkova

What Is Being Made

SVISLAČ is an oversized striped sweater designed by Veta Romanenkova. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a relaxed-fit pullover with positive ease at the bust line of 6-10 inches (15-25 cm). The sweater is available in four sizes, ranging from 44 to 55 inches (112 to 139 cm) in finished bust circumference, making it suitable for various body sizes and layering preferences.

Construction Method

The sweater is worked flat in separate pieces, constructed from the bottom up using traditional knitting techniques. Individual components are knitted separately and then wet-blocked and sewn together to create the finished garment. This modular approach allows for easier management of the project during the knitting process and ensures precise shaping and finishing.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The primary stitch used throughout SVISLAČ is stockinette stitch (St st), which creates the classic smooth, V-patterned fabric characteristic of traditional knitwear. The striped design is achieved through color work using two distinct yarns: a main color (MC) and a contrasting color (CC), which are alternated to create horizontal stripes across the sweater body and sleeves.

The pattern incorporates wet-blocking techniques to achieve proper gauge and finished measurements after construction. This finishing method ensures even tension, accurate sizing, and professional results. The use of stitch holders and waste yarn allows for seamless integration of different sections during assembly.

Needles and Tools Required

This project requires two sizes of needles:

  • Size US 2 (3 mm) needles for ribbed edgings and cuff details
  • Size US 4 (3.5 mm) needles for the main stockinette stitch fabric

Additional notions include a tapestry needle for seaming, safety pins for marking, waste yarn for holding stitches, stitch holders for managing active stitches, and an optional size US D (3 mm) crochet hook for finishing details.

Yarn Specifications

SVISLAČ uses premium natural fibers in two coordinating yarns:

Main Color (MC): Woolfolk Tynd, composed of 100% Ovis 21 Ultimate Merino® wool. This fingering-weight yarn provides 223 yards (204 meters) per 50-gram skein. The project requires 3 to 5 skeins depending on size, totaling approximately 670 to 920 yards (610 to 840 meters) of yarn.

Contrasting Color (CC): Camel-Hair by Ornaghi Filati, a luxury blend containing 50% alpaca fiber. This yarn contributes softness and sheen to the striped design while complementing the merino base yarn.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 25 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch on US 4 (3.5 mm) needles after blocking. Achieving correct gauge is essential for proper fit and finished measurements. Knitters should adjust needle size if necessary to match this gauge before beginning the project.

The sample shown is size 2 with 9 inches (23 cm) of positive ease, photographed on a model standing 5 feet 9 inches tall. This demonstrates the sweater's generous, relaxed silhouette.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, SVISLAČ is suitable for knitters with foundational skills in stockinette stitch, color work, and garment assembly. The straightforward construction and classic techniques make it an accessible project for those progressing beyond beginner patterns while not requiring advanced shaping or complex stitch patterns.
