Product Description

The Super Star Blanket (so named due to its size) is worked using the corner to corner (c2c) crochet method. This is an easy crochet technique that creates a wonderful texture and works up quickly.

The pattern includes both a chart and written pattern instructions.

My finished blanket measures approximately 42 inches by 44 inches and is borderless.

I used approximately 4 x 100g balls of Cream and 3 x 100g balls of Empire in Stylecraft Special DK (8ply yarn/light worsted weight). Being a c2c chart it will work with any weight yarn but the finished size will vary if the specified yarn and hook size are not used.

Please note: The pattern does not include a corner to corner tutorial. If you have not worked using the c2c method before then you may wish to find a tutorial prior to working this pattern.

Super Star Blanket Crochet Pattern

Project Overview

The Super Star Blanket is a beginner to intermediate-level crochet blanket design by Helen McLean of Sew Sew Baby. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished blanket measuring approximately 44 inches by 42 inches, making it an ideal size for a cozy throw or baby blanket. The design features a charted corner-to-corner construction method, which is an accessible technique for crocheters looking to work colorwork patterns without the complexity of traditional intarsia or tapestry crochet.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This pattern employs the corner-to-corner (C2C) crochet technique, a popular method that builds the blanket diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner. This approach offers several advantages for crafters: it eliminates the need for precise gauge matching, allows for easy customization of finished size, and creates a naturally structured fabric. The pattern includes both US and UK crochet terminology, making it accessible to international crocheters regardless of their regional terminology preference.

The written instructions are organized to work from the bottom right corner of the blanket, providing clear directional guidance throughout the construction process. The accompanying chart serves as a visual reference for the colorwork pattern, showing where to place each color throughout the design.

Stitches and Stitch Work

While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern excerpt, corner-to-corner crochet typically utilizes basic crochet stitches such as chain stitches and double crochet (or treble crochet in UK terminology) worked in a grid formation. This stitch selection keeps the pattern beginner-friendly while still producing a structured, durable fabric suitable for a blanket.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Super Star Blanket pattern calls for DK weight yarn, specifically Stylecraft Special DK in 100% premium acrylic. The yarn requirements are:

  • 4 balls of Cream (Colour C)
  • 3 balls of Empire (Colour E)
  • Total: 7 balls of DK weight yarn

Stylecraft Special DK yarn provides 295 metres (322 yards) per 100-gram ball, offering good yardage for a substantial blanket project. The pattern notes that any DK weight yarn of similar yardage can be substituted, allowing crafters flexibility in color and fiber choice while maintaining consistent sizing.

Tools and Notions

The pattern requires a 4mm crochet hook and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and finishing. The pattern specifically notes that gauge and tension are not vital for this design, provided the crocheter works evenly throughout with the same weight yarn and hook size. This flexibility makes the pattern particularly forgiving for beginners.

Customization and Pattern Flexibility

Crafters have the option to adjust the finished blanket size by using a different hook size or yarn weight. The pattern advises that maintaining consistency with the same weight yarn and hook throughout the project will ensure even results, regardless of which size is chosen. This adaptability makes the Super Star Blanket suitable for various project goals, from small baby blankets to larger throws.
