Product Description

On April 7, 2020 we had a pink Supermoon, which happens when the moon reaches the nearest point to Earth in its orbit. This closeness creates the illusion that the moon is larger than average, just like the lace in this super chunky beanie. This hat knits up in a flash and is a great way to explore lace stitches for the first time.

The Super moon cowl is the perfect cozy accompaniment to the Super Moon beanie. It’s also a great excuse to knit up another skein of Rasta or the Super Bulky skein of your dreams. The simple lace pattern is suitable for beginners who want to expand their skillset.

Gauge: 2/inch with US 15 in stockinette Size: Teen to Adult (21-23” head circ) Yarn: 1 skein Malabrigo Rasta Notions: • Circular needles US 13, 15, and 17 • Double Pointed Needles US 15 (if desired) • Darning needle • Scissors • Measuring Tape

Super Moon Hat and Cowl by IsolaHandmade

What is Being Made

The Super Moon is a knitted beanie hat and cowl set designed by Kali Sierra Berg. This pattern creates a teen to adult-sized hat with an approximate head circumference of 21-23 inches. The design draws inspiration from the astronomical phenomenon of a supermoon—when the moon reaches its closest point to Earth in its orbit, appearing larger than average. The lace pattern in this hat mimics that visual illusion of size and grandeur, making it an ideal project for knitters exploring lace stitches for the first time.

Techniques and Stitches Used

The Super Moon pattern employs lace knitting techniques, which are central to the design's aesthetic appeal. Lace knitting combines decreases with yarn overs to create openwork patterns and is an excellent introduction to decorative stitch work for intermediate knitters. The pattern utilizes several fundamental lace stitches and techniques:

  • Yarn overs (YO): A foundational lace technique where the working yarn is brought to the front of the work and around the right-hand needle to create intentional holes and decorative eyelets
  • Knit two stitches together (K2tog): A right-leaning decrease used to balance yarn overs and shape the garment
  • Knit two stitches together through the back loop (K2togtbl): A left-leaning decrease that provides directional variety in lace patterns
  • Stockinette stitch: The base stitch used in sections of the hat, providing structure and contrast to the lace elements

The hat is constructed using circular knitting methods, which allows for seamless construction and even stitch distribution around the crown.

Materials and Specifications

Yarn: The pattern calls for 1 skein of Malabrigo Rasta in a super bulky weight, or approximately 70 yards of any super bulky weight yarn. The sample shown uses the Frank Ochre colorway, which provides warm tonal depth to the lace pattern. Super bulky yarn allows the hat to knit up quickly while maintaining clear stitch definition in the lace work.

Needles and Notions: The pattern requires US 13 and US 15 circular needles, with US 15 double-pointed needles optional for working the crown decreases. Additional notions include a darning needle for weaving in ends, scissors, and a measuring tape for gauge checking and fit verification.

Gauge: The pattern is worked at a gauge of 2 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch using US 15 needles, which is appropriate for super chunky yarn and creates a fabric with excellent drape and warmth.

Difficulty Level and Project Scope

Rated as an intermediate project, the Super Moon hat is designed to challenge knitters who have mastered basic techniques but are ready to explore decorative stitch work. While lace knitting may seem intimidating, this pattern serves as an accessible entry point into the craft, combining straightforward construction with manageable lace sections. The quick knit time—thanks to the super bulky yarn weight—makes it an encouraging project for skill-building without requiring an extensive time commitment.
