Product Description
I have been trying to work on my home decorating, and bring more of a modern farmhouse feel. I thought this chunky crocheted blanket in shades of white and blue would be the perfect addition for Winter. While my favorite way to work this technique is with a variegated color underneath, and a solid coordinating color on top, it also looks great with two solids or even just one color. I used Bernat Blanket Yarn in White and Faded Blues for my throw blanket, and I had mine finished in just over 11.5 hours. Video tutorial included.
Super Chunky Through the Window Afghan
What Is Being Made
The Super Chunky Through the Window Afghan is a crochet blanket designed by Alexandra EyeLoveKnots. This project is available in multiple sizes, with the first two sizes specifically intended as newborn photography props. The afghan features a distinctive visual pattern created through mosaic crochet techniques, offering an aesthetically striking finished piece suitable for layering in newborn photography sessions or as a decorative throw blanket.
Techniques Used
This afghan is constructed using mosaic crochet, a stitch technique that may appear complex but is accessible to confident beginners. The mosaic method creates an interlocking visual pattern by strategically skipping stitches and working into specific rows to build dimensional designs. The designer emphasizes that while the stitch pattern might initially seem intimidating, the construction method is straightforward once understood. A video tutorial is provided with the pattern to guide crocheters through the mosaic technique.
Stitches Used
The Super Chunky Through the Window Afghan employs a combination of fundamental crochet stitches to achieve its mosaic pattern:
- Single crochet - forms the base structure of the mosaic pattern
- Chain stitches - creates the openwork elements and transitions within the pattern
- Double crochet - used strategically to create the overlapping effects that define the mosaic design
Materials
This afghan is worked in super chunky yarn weight, which creates a quick, satisfying crochet project with bold texture and visual impact. The pattern references Bernat Blanket Yarn as a suitable material option. Due to the super chunky yarn weight, this blanket works up relatively quickly compared to projects using lighter yarn weights, making it an efficient project for intermediate-level crocheters.
Difficulty Level
The pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the mosaic crochet technique may appear challenging to beginners, the designer indicates that confident beginners with foundational crochet skills can successfully complete this project. The combination of single crochet, chain, and double crochet stitches are all fundamental techniques, and the video tutorial support helps demystify the mosaic construction method.
Important Sizing and Safety Notes
The first two sizes of this afghan are designed as newborn photography props and follow sizing guidelines similar to preemie blankets. However, the designer specifically recommends against using blankets made from Bernat Blanket Yarn for actual preemie use, as this yarn is too heavy and can cause overheating in premature infants. The newborn photography sizes are intended exclusively for photo prop layering, where the blanket serves as a base layer with additional layering blankets positioned on top before the baby is placed.
