Product Description
This casual cotton shawl adds a carefree, or perhaps retro, touch to your spring and summer wardrobe. A simple knotted stitch keeps it open and light and it's finished off with a playful fringe. The size is easily adjustable for a larger or smaller shawl and the pattern could be used with any weight yarn.
The sample shawl was knit in worsted weight elann Den-M-Nit Pure Indigo Cotton and used every last bit of 200g (368m/400yds) of elann Den-M-Nit, so 450 yds has been indicated as the amount needed as yardage could vary slightly between knitters.
Sunsprite Shawlette by Karen Heimburger
What is Being Made
Sunsprite is a casual cotton shawlette designed by Karen Heimburger that adds a carefree, retro touch to spring and summer wardrobes. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a lightweight shawl suitable for warm-weather wear, offering an intermediate-level knitting project for crafters with some experience.
Construction and Techniques
The shawlette is constructed using a garter tab cast-on method, which creates a neat, finished edge. The pattern begins with a provisional cast-on using waste yarn, followed by a garter stitch tab that is picked up to create the foundation for the main shawl body. This technique is commonly used in shawl construction to eliminate a bulky cast-on edge and create a polished appearance.
The design incorporates increases worked symmetrically on either side of stitch markers to create the characteristic shawl shape. The pattern uses yarn overs and decreases to form decorative lace elements throughout the piece, allowing the shawlette to grow gradually from the garter tab foundation.
Stitches Used
- Garter stitch – the foundational stitch for the tab and edge borders
- Stockinette stitch – used in the body sections between pattern repeats
- Yarn overs (yo) – creates lace holes and contributes to shaping
- Centered double decreases (sk2p) – a symmetric decrease that pairs with yarn overs for lace patterning
- Knit front and back (kfb) – an increase technique used at shaping points
- Slip stitch (SLM) – slipping stitch markers to track pattern repeats
The pattern features the Knotted Threads repeat, described as a fairly simple repeat that benefits from swatching to help you read the stitches and anticipate your place in the pattern, particularly useful if you set your work down mid-row.
Materials and Yarn Weight
Sunsprite is suitable for multiple yarn weights, accommodating 4-ply, DK (double knit), sport, and worsted weight yarns. The pattern specifies cotton yarn, making it an ideal choice for warm-weather garments with excellent drape and breathability.
Essential tools include knitting needles appropriate for your chosen yarn weight, stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points, waste yarn for the provisional cast-on, and optionally a small crochet hook to assist with picking up stitches during the garter tab construction.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with stitch markers, yarn overs, and centered decreases. The straightforward repeat structure supports skill development without overwhelming complexity.
