Product Description
Sunray Shawl was designed in the middle of a dark and cold winter. The lace pattern and the colorway vividly reminded me of the sun during these long months - hence the name. I am not a big fan of purling, so this time I decided to design the shawl on garter stitch ground. There is zero purling and the shawl is reversible.
Sunray is worked top-down and has patterning on almost every row – both right and wrong side. The main pattern is easy to learn and very repetitive. The edging is a bit more complicated, but not by much.
The stitch patterns have both charted and written instructions. The stitches used are k, yo, k2tog and skp. There are three different stitch patterns; one for body and two for edge.

What is Being Made
The Sunray Shawl is a small triangular knitted shawl designed by Henna Markkanen. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a finished shawl measuring 45 inches by 25 inches (115 x 64 cm), making it an ideal size for a lightweight wrap or shoulder accessory. The shawl is worked from the top down, creating a classic triangular silhouette that is both elegant and versatile.
Construction and Techniques
The Sunray Shawl is constructed using a top-down knitting method, which allows knitters to try on the shawl as it grows and adjust the final size if desired. A defining characteristic of this design is its construction on a garter stitch ground, which means the shawl requires no purling throughout the project. This makes the shawl reversible, allowing it to be worn with either side facing outward without any visible difference in appearance.
The pattern features patterning on almost every row, including both right-side and wrong-side rows, which creates visual interest and texture throughout the entire piece. The main stitch pattern is described as easy to learn and highly repetitive, making it accessible for intermediate-level knitters despite the frequent patterning. The edging is slightly more intricate than the main body pattern but remains manageable for knitters at this skill level.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Sunray Shawl employs fundamental knitting stitches and increases that are clearly defined in the pattern. Key stitches include:
- Knit (k) – the primary stitch forming the garter stitch base
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) – a right-slanting decrease used for shaping
- Knit into front and back (kfb) – an increase technique for expanding the triangular shape
- Make 1 increases (M1, M2, etc.) – additional increase methods used throughout the pattern
The pattern provides both charted and written instructions for all stitch patterns, allowing knitters to follow their preferred method of reading instructions. The repetitive nature of the main pattern combined with the garter stitch construction creates a meditative knitting experience while still producing a sophisticated finished garment.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Sunray Shawl requires 420 yards (380 meters) of fingering weight yarn, also known as 4-ply yarn. Fingering weight is a delicate, thin yarn that creates intricate stitch definition, making it ideal for showcasing the patterning throughout this design. The yardage requirement is relatively modest, making this an excellent project for using yarn from a stash or for creating multiple versions in different colorways.
The pattern notes that yardage requirements may change if substituting different yarn weights or needle sizes, so knitters should swatch and measure carefully when making yarn substitutions. Standard knitting needles appropriate for fingering weight yarn are required, though specific needle size recommendations would be detailed in the complete pattern instructions.
Pattern Format and Difficulty
This is an intermediate-level knitting pattern available as a downloadable PDF, making it accessible for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to work with more complex stitch patterns. The intermediate classification reflects the consistent patterning on every row and the slightly more involved edging, rather than any particularly difficult individual techniques. The repetitive nature of the main pattern helps knitters build confidence and develop rhythm as they work through the project.
