Sunny Scandinavian Hat by LizzyLou

What is Being Made

The Sunny Scandinavian Hat is a knitted hat designed by independent designer LizzyLou. This project creates a finished hat using traditional Scandinavian colorwork techniques, resulting in a vibrant, multi-colored design suitable for intermediate knitters.

Craft and Primary Technique

This is a knitting project that incorporates Scandinavian colorwork, a traditional technique that involves working with multiple colors within the same row to create intricate patterned designs. The Scandinavian colorwork method is a classic approach to adding visual interest and complexity to knitted garments while maintaining structural integrity.

Colorwork Methods and Stitches

The hat employs two primary colorwork techniques:

  • Stranding: The primary method used when switching between colors. When stranding, the color not currently being knitted is carried loosely across the wrong side of the work, creating what is known as a "float." This technique works most effectively when the color changes occur within 4 to 5 stitches or fewer, keeping the floats short and manageable.
  • Weaving-in: Used for longer floats that exceed the optimal stranding distance. This technique involves catching the unused yarn float on the wrong side using the working yarn, preventing long loops that could snag or create an uneven appearance on the inside of the hat.
  • Color Changes: When introducing a new color, the yarn must be twisted with the previous color to prevent holes from forming at the transition point, ensuring a seamless appearance in the finished colorwork.

Yarn and Materials

The Sunny Scandinavian Hat is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn (also known as 8 ply), with each ball typically containing 103 to 105 metres (112 to 114 yards). The designer recommends using merino wool for its softness and durability, with specific recommendations for Debbie Bliss Rialto DK or Broadway Merino DK wool.

Color Requirements:

  • Apricot: 2 balls (approximately 120 metres or 131 yards total)
  • Light blue: 1 ball
  • Yellow: 1 ball
  • Lime green: 1 ball
  • White: 1 ball

Needles Required:

  • Five 3.25mm/US 3 double-pointed needles (DPNs), or alternatively one 3.25mm/US 3 circular needle for casting on and working the ribbed cuff
  • One 4mm/US 6 circular needle for the main body of the hat
  • Five 4mm/US 6 double-pointed needles for decreasing at the crown

Difficulty Level

This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to tackle the additional complexity of working with multiple colors and managing colorwork floats.
