Sunflower Granny Square Flap Bag Crochet Pattern
Project Overview
The Sunflower Granny Square Flap Bag is a crochet pattern designed by Eva Shipp of Jeanne's Diner Designs. This intermediate-level project creates a functional handbag featuring classic granny square motifs arranged in a sunflower design. The pattern draws inspiration from Cottage Core aesthetics, celebrating simple living and handmade craftsmanship through a practical accessory suitable for everyday use.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a structured flap bag with a distinctive sunflower granny square design. The bag combines decorative crochet elements with functional construction, featuring a flap closure and suitable proportions for carrying essentials. The sunflower motif serves as both the visual centerpiece and structural foundation of the design.
Crochet Techniques Used
- Granny square construction and assembly
- Motif-based design and arrangement
- Flap bag shaping and closure techniques
- Joining and finishing methods for structured bags
- Pattern integration for dimensional flower elements
Stitches and Stitch Work
The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches typical of granny square construction. While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided content, granny square patterns traditionally employ chain stitches, double crochet stitches, and slip stitches to create the characteristic open-work squares that form the sunflower design.
Materials and Yarn
This pattern is designed for Aran or Worsted weight yarn, both medium-weight options that provide good stitch definition and drape suitable for bag construction. The yarn weight choice allows for a bag with appropriate structure and durability while maintaining the decorative quality of the granny square motifs. A crochet hook appropriate to the selected yarn weight is required for pattern execution.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes familiarity with basic crochet techniques and granny square construction. Crafters should be comfortable reading crochet patterns, joining motifs, and assembling bag components. The intermediate classification reflects the coordination required to arrange multiple squares into the sunflower design and construct a finished bag with proper shaping and closure.
