Product Description

A really pretty, summer top with shell stitch patterning divided by a single stitch worked in the row below to help the rib effect to stand out. The lower edge slightly dips at the base of each “shell”. An easy design to length (or shorten) which you can do before the sleeve shaping by adding or subtracting 10 rows so that you still end up on the correct row before shaping the sleeves - easy! The back is worked in stocking stitch and the narrow borders are all in garter stitch.

Summer Top with Shell Panels by Pat Menchini

What is Being Made

The Summer Top with Shell Panels is a knitted garment designed by Pat Menchini, featuring decorative shell stitch panels as a key design element. This top is crafted as a lightweight, warm-weather piece suitable for various bust sizes ranging from 81 cm (32 inches) to 137 cm (54 inches). The finished garment length varies by size, measuring approximately 49 to 56 cm (19½ to 22 inches) from the shoulder, making it an ideal length for layering or wearing as a standalone piece during warmer months.

Craft and Techniques

This project is a knitting pattern of intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. The pattern incorporates shell stitch panels, which are a classic decorative knitting technique that creates a scalloped, shell-like appearance. The top is constructed using flat knitting with straight needles for the main body pieces, with the option to use circular needles for certain sections. The construction method involves working multiple pieces that are later seamed together, requiring knitters to be comfortable with garment assembly and finishing techniques.

Stitches Used

The pattern employs stockinette stitch (abbreviated as st-st) as the primary stitch for the main fabric, providing a smooth, classic knit surface. The defining feature of this design is the incorporation of shell stitch panels, which create textured, decorative elements throughout the garment. These shell panels add visual interest and dimension to the piece while maintaining the lightweight quality essential for a summer top.

Materials and Specifications

This pattern calls for Rico-Design Essentials Cotton DK yarn, a natural fiber choice ideal for warm-weather garments. The yarn is specified at 130 metres (142 yards) per 50g ball. Yarn requirements vary by size: the smallest sizes require 6 balls, mid-range sizes need 7 or 8 balls, with the largest sizes requiring 8 balls of the 50g weight. The recommended shade is Smokey Rose, though substitutions are possible if tension requirements are matched.

The pattern requires two sizes of knitting needles: a pair of 3.25 mm (UK 10, US 3) needles and a pair of 4 mm (UK 8, US 6) needles. Additionally, a set of four 3.25 mm (UK 10, US 3) circular or double-pointed needles is needed for certain sections of the pattern. A stitch holder is also required for managing stitches during construction.

Tension and Sizing Information

Achieving the correct tension is critical for this pattern's success. The specified tension is 22 stitches and 28 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) over stockinette stitch using 4 mm needles. The pattern emphasizes testing tension before beginning, as tension that is too loose requires switching to finer needles, while overly tight tension necessitates using larger needles. Six size options are provided, with actual finished bust measurements ranging from 91 cm (36 inches) to 141 cm (55½ inches), accommodating a wide range of body sizes.
