Named for an iconic landmark in my hometown, Sugar Loaf, is a rock pinnacle that sits high above on a river bluff. It towers 500-ft over Lake Winona, a former part of the Mississippi River main channel. Sugar Loaf has great hiking trails to the rock pinnacle and is enjoyed by many for both rock and ice climbing.
Designed using worsted weight yarn, the Sugar Loaf will be a great gift to yourself or that special someone.
With every Knits for Cures pattern you purchase a portion of the sale is donated to research organizations focused on the fights to cure all cancers.

Sugar Loaf Striped Knit Hat by Crystal
Project Overview
The Sugar Loaf is an intermediate-level knitted hat designed by independent designer Crystal Hiatt. This simple striped hat serves as a versatile wardrobe addition, inspired by the iconic Sugar Loaf rock pinnacle located on a river bluff in Winona, Minnesota. The landmark towers 500 feet above Lake Winona, a former channel of the Mississippi River, and is a popular destination for hiking, rock climbing, and ice climbing. This hat captures that spirit of adventure in an accessible, wearable design.
What You'll Make
You will create a fitted knit hat with horizontal stripes, sized to fit head circumferences between 20 to 22 inches (51 to 56 centimeters). The design uses a primary color combined with multiple contrast color stripes, creating visual interest through simple color blocking.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate knitting project employs fundamental techniques suitable for knitters with some experience. The pattern utilizes basic knit stitches worked in the round to construct the hat seamlessly.
- Cast On (CO): The foundation technique for creating the initial stitches on your needles
- Knit Stitch (K/k): The primary stitch used throughout the construction
- Beginning of Round (BOR): Working in the round to create a seamless, tubular fabric
- Bind Off (BO): The finishing technique used to secure stitches and complete the hat edge
- Contrast Color (CC) Striping: The pattern incorporates multiple contrast colors to create horizontal stripes, adding visual dimension to the finished hat
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Sugar Loaf is designed using worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight category that works up quickly and creates a durable, warm fabric ideal for hats. The total yardage requirement is 140 yards (130 meters).
Sample Yarn Used: Berroco Vintage, a blend of 52% acrylic, 40% wool, and 8% nylon with a yardage of 218 yards per 199 meters per skein. The sample hat was constructed using:
- Main Color (MC): Mocha, 96 yards (88 meters)
- Contrast Color 1 (CC1): Douglas Fir, 15 yards (14 meters)
- Contrast Color 2 (CC2): Black Cherry, 15 yards (14 meters)
- Contrast Color 3 (CC3): Chana Dal, 15 yards (14 meters)
The yarn blend provides warmth and durability while maintaining softness and wearability. Worsted weight yarn is forgiving for intermediate knitters and creates a fabric with excellent stitch definition, allowing the striped pattern to display clearly.
Gauge and Fit Notes
Gauge is not critical for this project, making it an excellent choice for knitters who prefer flexibility in their finished dimensions. Minor variations in yarn weight or tension will not significantly impact the wearability of the finished hat, though differences in yarn characteristics may subtly affect the final appearance.
