Suga the Sloth Amigurumi Crochet Pattern
What is Being Made
Suga the Sloth is a sweet, cuddly amigurumi toy designed by Cara Engwerda. This small crocheted companion features a cheerful personality and is perfect for gift-giving or as a decorative piece. The finished sloth toy is an ideal beginner-friendly project that creates an adorable stuffed animal suitable for children and collectors alike.
Craft and Technique
This pattern uses crochet as the primary construction method. The project employs amigurumi techniques, which is the Japanese art of crocheting small, stuffed three-dimensional toys and creatures. Amigurumi construction involves working in continuous rounds to create seamless, spherical, and organic shapes that are then stuffed and assembled into a finished character.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches suitable for beginners:
- Chain (ch) – the foundation stitch used to start sections of the pattern
- Single Crochet (sc) – the primary stitch used throughout the body, limbs, and facial features
- Single Crochet Increase (inc) – worked as 2 single crochet stitches in one stitch to increase stitch count and expand shapes
- Single Crochet Decrease (sc 2 together) – used to decrease stitches and shape the toy
- Magic Ring (MR) – an alternative starting technique for beginning amigurumi pieces in the round
Materials and Tools
The pattern requires DK weight yarn (also referred to as 8ply or Light Worsted), which is a medium-weight yarn that works well for detailed amigurumi projects. You will need approximately 50 grams of beige yarn for the main body, with small amounts of plum, fudge, and cream yarns for color accents and details. Black 4ply yarn or embroidery thread is used for facial features such as eyes.
A 2.75mm crochet hook (US size C-2) is required to work with the DK weight yarn at the appropriate gauge. Basic tools include scissors for finishing yarn ends.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it accessible to crocheters new to amigurumi or those just starting their crochet journey. The straightforward stitch combinations and simple shaping techniques make Suga the Sloth an excellent introductory toy pattern.
