Product Description
Striped Double Stranded Blanket in Plymouth Yarn Dreambaby DK – Pattern F630
This free downloadable knitting pattern from Plymouth Yarn (pattern number F630) guides knitters through creating a soft, generously sized striped baby blanket measuring approximately 36" x 44". Designed by the Plymouth Yarn Design Studio and released as a complimentary pattern with yarn purchase, it is an ideal project for beginners looking to practice fundamental knitting techniques while producing a beautiful, heirloom-quality nursery piece.
What Is Being Made
The finished project is a classic striped baby blanket worked in a double-stranded technique, combining one strand of a white main color with one strand of a rotating contrast color throughout. The result is a thick, cozy, and visually soft striped fabric with a garter stitch border framing all edges. The blanket's generous dimensions — 36 inches wide by 44 inches long — make it suitable as a crib blanket, stroller throw, or tummy-time mat.
Materials Required
- Plymouth Yarn Dreambaby DK — a DK weight yarn specifically formulated for baby projects
- 6 × 50g balls of color 100 White (Main Color / MC)
- 2 × 50g balls of color 129 Pink Rose (CC1)
- 2 × 50g balls of color 147 Cameo Pink (CC2)
- 2 × 50g balls of color 145 Aqua (CC3)
- US Size 10 (6mm) circular needle, 24" or 32" length
Although Dreambaby DK is a DK weight yarn, holding two strands together throughout the pattern effectively creates a worsted-to-bulky fabric weight, which is why the larger US Size 10 needle is called for. This double-stranding technique also produces a denser, warmer fabric — perfect for keeping a baby snug and comfortable.
Techniques Used
- Double stranding: Two strands of yarn are held together at all times throughout the entire project. One strand is always the Main Color (White), while the second strand rotates between the three contrast colors (CC1, CC2, CC3) according to the stripe sequence. This blending technique creates soft, heathered color transitions rather than harsh solid stripes.
- Striped color work: Colors are changed at regular 4" intervals by cutting the contrast color and joining the next, following a specific sequence that cycles through Pink Rose, Cameo Pink, and Aqua multiple times across the length of the blanket.
- Casting on and binding off: The blanket begins with a cable or long-tail cast-on of 135 stitches and is bound off on a right-side row after the final garter stitch border section.
- Weaving in ends: Because colors are cut and rejoined at each stripe transition, finishing involves weaving in all yarn ends securely for a clean, professional result.
- Light blocking: The pattern calls for light blocking after completion to even out the stitches and open up the fabric to its full dimensions.
Stitches Used
- Garter stitch: Used for the first and last 2" of the blanket (top and bottom borders) as well as maintained continuously along the first and last 8 stitches of every row to create neat, non-curling side borders. Garter stitch is formed by knitting every row, making it one of the most beginner-friendly stitch patterns available.
- Stockinette stitch (St st): Used for the main body of the blanket between the garter stitch borders. Stockinette is worked by alternating a knit row with a purl row, creating the classic smooth "V" stitch fabric on the right side. Because the double-stranded yarn creates a thick, substantial fabric, the stockinette body has excellent drape and warmth.
Gauge
The pattern specifies a gauge of 15 stitches and 22 rows = 4 inches over stockinette stitch, holding 2 strands together
